Doctor Kara Fitzgerald Podcast: Towards Predicting Autism in Utero with Dr. Janine LaSalle

What if we could actually identify and even correct significant autism risk factors in utero, before a baby is born? This is the promise of the game-changing research of Dr. Janine LaSalle, epigeneticist extraordinaire from UC Davis. With autism rates continuing to increase at alarming rates (the latest data from the CDC, released in 2023, is 1 in 36 children in the US, an increase from the prior 1 in 44), new ways to prevent and treat this condition are of utmost importance.

Funding Opportunities

Development of Biomarkers or Biomarker Signatures for Neurological and Neuromuscular Disorders (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Optional)

Funder: National Institutes of Health (NIH), United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)

Details: The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to promote the development of fit-for-purpose candidate biomarkers and biomarker signatures that enable more efficient clinical trials to advance therapeutic development or be used in clinical practice to help guide clinical care decisions. Specifically, the goal of this phased funding mechanism is to first identify or confirm candidate biomarkers or biomarker signatures using human samples and/or data, followed by an independent retrospective or prospective clinical study to conduct initial clinical validation of the biomarker/signature’s clinical utility for a defined Context of Use(s). In the first phase, applicants are expected to demonstrate that the biomarker acceptably identifies or predicts the concept of interest and may include optimization of the detection method using carefully standardized human samples or datasets. The overarching purpose of this initiative is to deliver candidate biomarkers or biomarker signatures that are ready for definitive analytical and clinical validation studies.

Application Deadline: February 21, 2025

Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) (K12 Clinical Trial Optional)

Funder: National Institutes of Health (NIH), United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
Amount: $840,000USD

Details: The NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) and participating NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices (ICOs) invite institutional career development award applications for Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) Career Development Programs, hereafter termed "Programs". Programs will support mentored research career development of junior faculty members, known as BIRCWH Scholars, who have recently completed clinical training or postdoctoral fellowships, and who will be engaged in interdisciplinary basic, translational, data science, behavioral, clinical, and/or health services research relevant to the health of women and, where appropriate, the use of both sexes to better understand the influence of sex as a biological variable on health and disease.

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) allows appointment of Scholars (K12) proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial; or proposing a separate ancillary clinical trial; or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, as part of their research and career development.
Application Deadline: May 28, 2026
