A TRIBUTE TO PETE DYE
A recent article in “Counselor”, the newsletter of the Counselors of Real Estate got my attention.  The article, by Deborah Cloutier, CRE addresses the risks of climate change for real estate.  Weather and Climate-Related Risk was ranked #3 among the top 10 issues affecting real estate for 2019-2020.  Given the golf industry’s already high level of sensitivity to weather, it seems only reasonable to explore the risks extreme weather and climate change present to the golf industry.

One of the most important things in golf (and in life) is good balance.  It is nearly impossible to hit good golf shots when unbalanced, we all try to eat balanced diets and hopefully our personal relationships have the balance that allows both partners to thrive.

Much like our political environment, I often see clubs that lack balance in their policies and planning.  Simply put, some spend too little and some not enough.

While exercising one morning a few weeks back I watched with interest a discussion between CNN Science/Aviation Correspondent Miles O’Brien and Former FAA Inspector General Mary Schiavo (also the author of Blind Trust).  As a 44-year licensed pilot and flight instructor and frequent airline passenger, I have considerable interest in the fate of the grounded Boeing 737 Max 8.

What struck me most about their discussion were two comments:

O’Brien mentioned that Boeing’s new CFO has an accounting background and suggested that it might be time to install someone with an engineering background at the helm.

Schiavo mentioned that the 737 Max 8 was certified under the already existing 737 series certification and that for it to fly in the future, may have to undergo a completely new (and costly) certification process, as a new airplane.
