News That Rocks
Senior Memory: Winning Best of Season

We're saying Hello! to Summer, making plans for our reopening and saying Farewell to our beloved seniors. Read all about it and more in this month's Rock School News!

We've Brought the Rock Back!

It has been a looooong three months since we've been able to play music together in person, but that ended this past weekend! Our Performance Program kids put on an AMAZING set of shows that inspite of the heat were just the breath of fresh air we've been missing so much. We had several safety protocols in place to protect our students, staff and families while still being able to ROCK! It's been nothing short of an adventure navigating this past season, but we still came out on top! Way to go to all the performers! Also a huge shout out to the neighbors surrounding our school who allowed us to rock - THANK YOU!!

Our Summer Programs are Getting Ready for Take Off!

We are PUMPED to offer both in person and online options for our students this summer - there's something for everyone!  Read on:

In Person:  We're Taking On Four Great Shows - Sign Ups are Happening Now!

First we want to say that safety is our primary goal in moving forward with our in-person Performance Program options.  We have been working with medical professionals to ensure we've thought of everything, and have tweaked our usual format to provide smaller bands that will work together throughout the summer instead of our larger group format.  We have many protocols in place including symptom scanning, social distancing, frequent mandatory handwashing, isolation of vocalists and, of course masks.  To learn about our complete plan, please give us a call.
We are so excited to offer this great line up of show themes for Summer 2020:  Blink 182, Nirvana, White Stripes/Black Keys and ZZ Top - Call Jess to Sign Up Today! 703-858-0820

Two Online Group Performance Options

This summer we're starting two great new online programs. Check em out!
Epic Albums

Mondays 6 to 7PM with Mike

Mike Ruby, instructor extraordinaire from our Vienna location, will be leading this seasons sesson of Epic Albums where students will recreate The Cranberries debut Album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? released in 1993.  The album ran up the charts and is full of everything you would want to explore as a musician in the alternative rock genre.
Mike will lead band members through the ins and outs of recording along with a deep dive into this fantastic music that should be on every student's list of music to know, play and understand.  No recording experience needed or special equipment required, though a microphone and interface is strongly recommended.
About Mike... He is a professional bassist and educator. Having recently moved to the DC area, Mike played and taught in Chicago for 10 years, after graduating Columbia College with a BA in Music. While in Chicago, Mike recorded with and co-produced hip-hop project House Of Whales. He also played in numerous bands that played genres ranging from indie rock to blues. Mike has had the pleasure of opening for B.B. King and studying with musicians such as Joan Osborne, Christian McBride, Nicholas Tremulis and Chuck Webb. Mike is excited to share his expertise and excitement for this fun recording project with the SOR DC Area students.
Learn to Write Music

Thursdays 7:30 to 9PM with Neel

Neel Madan, our School of Rock Silver Spring Music Director, will be leading our fun, new Songwriting Program. Creating original songs can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences for musicians. School of Rock’s Songwriting Program teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works. Students have one weekly private lesson on an instrument of their choice where they learn concepts, technique and theory. These principles are then applied in weekly group lessons where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops. Every few months, Songwriting Program students can perform a showcase, open mic or band together to record a demo their original songs. Need more info?  Call Jess on 703-858-0820.

Remote, Live Lessons Are Ongoing

Returning to the School!

We're preparing to return to in-school lessons as soon as possible. We've already had a few group rehearsals back in the building and have implemented new safety protocols to protect our students and staff, such as distance markers in the school, temperature and symptom checks, and barriers for our vocalists. Keep an eye on your inbox for more details! We will also continue providing Remote lessons for those who prefer it.

Summer Camps Are On!

We'll be holding in person Summer Camps in early August! We've got two sessions of Boot Camp and Rock 101 planned, so we've got something for everyone. If you have questions about which group might be right for your camper, call 703-858-0820 or email Ashburn@schoolofrock.com!
