Romans 10:17
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
New International Version (NIV)
What does gospel mean?  Good news.  Of what kind?  In the first century we have an inscription from the time when Augustus Caesar became the first emperor of the Roman Empire.   It says, "This is the greatest of the gospels:  Augustus Caesar, Son of God, has become Lord of all."  The word gospel was an announcement of a new king.  The evangelist or herald who brought the news announced the new emperor.

In many circles, gospel has become something of an adjective to describe a genre of music.  Gospel to some means telling the plan of salvation or recounting the four spiritual laws.  In the first century, it meant announcing the rule of a new King.  For the Christians, Jesus Christ, Son of God was Lord of all.  Instead of burning incense and saying, "Caesar is Lord," they bowed the knee and said, "Jesus Christ is Lord."  Polycarp, an early believer was offered the chance to live if he would renounce Christ as Lord.  Instead he said, "Eighty and six years I have served him and he has done me no wrong.  How can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?"  He was killed because he believed the message he had heard.

What if the gospel still means what it always meant?  What if gospel is not a formula to recite to gain a ticket to heaven, but a declaration of our full allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ in everything we do?  What if the gospel is not only about how to get to heaven, but about how to live our lives here on earth today?  The faith to believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, comes from hearing the message that he who died on the cross is the risen Lord of life.  We have heard the message.  What will we do?

 Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the messengers who tell us that your Son Jesus Christ is Lord of all.  We willingly submit to his Lordship today and declare our allegiance to Christ.  He is our only King.  We will not live for ourselves today but for the One who died for us and rose again and ascended to heaven and intercedes for us.  In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray . . . and live.  Amen.
