Ezra 7:8-10
Ezra arrived in Jerusalem in the fifth month of the seventh year of the king.  He had begun his journey from Babylon on the first day of the first month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the gracious hand of his God was on him.  For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.

School is back in session.  We can tell by the traffic in Houston.  Do you remember a teacher who blessed your life?  The list of teachers whom God used to help me is a long list.  I am so thankful for all of them and I pray for teachers as they begin a new school year.  May God bless them.

Ezra was a student and a teacher.  All good teachers are still students, always learning.  Ezra joined the former exiles who had returned to Jerusalem.  Joining him on the journey were priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers and servants.  Each one had a role to play.  Ezra came to teach.

Grace brought Ezra safely home.  What do you say to people who have spent decades in exile?  As a good teacher, Ezra determined in his heart to do three things.  First he wanted to study the law.  We teach what we know.  Second, he wanted to obey the law.  John Calvin said it would be better for me to trip going up the stairs to the pulpit and break my neck than to preach one thing and live another.  Third, he wanted to teach the law in Israel.

This year I get to teach an outstanding group of students as part of Truett Seminary on our campus.  What is my subject?  The whole Bible!  Pray that I will study, obey and teach.  I owe a debt to those who have taught me.  Most of all I am grateful for the gracious hand of God on all of us as we journey home to our Father.
Pray with me:
Father, as your disciples, your apprentices, help us to never stop learning.  Sprit of God our teacher be, showing the things of Christ to us.  Help us to learn so much about Jesus that we live like he lived.  Give us the grace to lead others to do the same.  In Jesus name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
