Psalm 96:4-5
For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
    he is to be feared above all gods.
 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.

New International Version (NIV)
                Where do you keep a god?  Remember when the Philistines defeated Israel and captured the Ark of the Covenant.  As Indiana Jones would later wonder in film lore, "Where do you store the Ark?"  The Philistines thought Yahweh might want to keep Dagon their fish-faced deity company.  So they put him in the temple and went home for the night.  To their chagrin, Dagon fell down, bowing before the Ark.  They propped him back up, dusted him off and hoped for the best.  The next day the idol had fallen again and smashed into pieces.

                Isaiah noted that the idolmakers of his day would prop up their gods so that a strong wind wouldn't blow them over.  One thought:  if you have to prop your god up, you might need to find a new One.   The Psalmist says it positively:  our Lord Yahweh is great and most worthy of praise.  He alone is to be feared.  While all the gods of the nations are idols, Yahweh created the heavens.

                So how are your gods?  Where do you store them?  Christopher Wright says that "False gods never fail to fail."  Like Lucille in a Kenny Rogers song, idols will pick a fine time to leave you.   There is only one incomparable, invincible, indefatigable God.  His name is the Lord.  Take the idols of success and wealth and power and sensuality out of the windows of your soul before they come crashing down and shatter in a thousand pieces in the presence of the only One who is God.  Where do you keep the only true God?  On his rightful throne as the exalted King of your life!

 Pray with me:
Father, our hearts can be idol-making factories.  We are always scanning for that new idol which will make us feel powerful, wealthy or attractive.  Today we confess the absolute impotence of other gods.  “The dearest idol we have known, whatever that idol be, help us to tear it from your throne and worship only thee.”  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
