Cultural Competency in Health Care
Everyone comes from different experiences, backgrounds and cultures, and it is the duty of athletic trainers and all health care providers to be aware of how these differences can affect patient care. Kysha Harriell, PhD, LAT, ATC, discussed the importance of cultural competency in health care during the University of Miami’s ’Cane Talks earlier this year. In honor of Black History Month, NATA would like to recognize Harriell for her achievements and insightful knowledge on diversity. Harriell shared the impact of her ’Cane Talks presentation and discussed the importance of cultural competency in a recent NATA Now blog post.

Apply to be a SLC Mentor by March 15
The NATA Student Leadership Committee is seeking a certified athletic trainer to serve as a mentor to the students on the committee. The committee is comprised of 11 students and three mentors. The mentors provide assistance, as needed, to the students with their responsibilities as committee members; provide leadership; and serve as positive role models for students. The deadline for applications is March 15.

The Professional Development Committee’s Professional Development Excellence Award honors an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the profession of athletic training in the area of continuing professional development. The deadline to submit nominations is March 17.

Remain in the Game: A Joint Effort
Joint injuries are common among all athletes, but occur at a higher rate in youth athletes who participate in running and jumping sports, such as soccer, football and basketball. Remain in the Game: A Joint Effort is an injury-prevention training program from the Osteoarthritis Action Alliance. With references to the NATA position statement, “Prevention of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury,” athletic trainers can use this resource to assist in reducing the risk of joint injuries in athletes and help keep them in the game.
