Titus 2:1-3
You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.   Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.
New International Version (NIV)
“Respect your elders!”  Were you taught that?  I was.  Many cultures revere the older generations as worthy of deep and profound respect.  When I think of the wisdom of the elders in our church, I stand in awe and gratitude to our gracious God that he allows me to serve with them.
Paul wrote to young pastors Timothy and Titus knowing that they were younger than most members in their congregations.  Age is not always a guarantee of wisdom.  Left to our own devices, not all of us actually grow up.  So Paul encouraged Titus to teach the older men and older women to live with holy reverence for God and to choose honorable behavior.
Good news:  God has grace for all years.  As we grow older, let us grow in wisdom and grace.  Younger generations are watching.  What would the world be like if they followed our example?  Let us choose well!
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the gift of growing not only older but wiser.  Help us to so live that the younger generations will want to believe and live as we do.  Help us to grow in grace today!  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
