Genesis 43:8-14
8 Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die. 9 I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life. 10 As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice.”
11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift—a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds. 12 Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake. 13 Take your brother also and go back to the man at once. 14 And may God Almighty grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”
New International Version (NIV)
Years ago, in Washington D. C. on a choir mission trip, we were praying over supper when my mentor asked about our sons.  I told him Graham’s little league baseball team was still undefeated.  Bill prayed, “Lord, help Graham’s team to lose some games.  We learn from our losses.”  Some of us felt indigestion.  What loss has shaped your life the most?  God teaches us not only through our gains but through our losses.
Esau could testify about losses.  Meanwhile, Jacob spent the early part of his life inflicting losses on others, taking from them.   When Rachel died and Joseph was sold into slavery, Jacob (now known as Israel) experienced tremendous losses.  Later, Simeon was left behind in Egypt.  We must not be surprised that Israel was unwilling to risk losing Benjamin as well in order to gain food.
Judah offered to guarantee Benjamin’s safety.  The brothers have learned from their losses as well.  Convinced by Judah, Israel allowed his sons to go and sent gifts to Joseph.  Israel hoped not to lose Benjamin and to recover his loss of Simeon.  Israel has learned from his losses.  Listen to the blessing he prays for the Egyptian leader:  May God Almighty grant mercy before the man so that my sons are restored.  God granted more mercy than Israel could have hoped.  Did he have any idea that a third son, Joseph might be restored to him?
Graham learned a lot the rest of the summer as his undefeated team suddenly found itself, well, defeated.  Again and again.  What did he learn from those losses?  God knows.  God only knows what we’ve been through.  Thankfully, God is not through.
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for things we have lost along the way on our journey.  We pray that you will take the journey of losses and gains and bring them together to glorify you and to edify us.  If there is something we are supposed to learn from our pain, we pray that we will not miss it.  We rejoice that you are the God of resurrection.  We count even our gains as losses, so that we may gain Christ and be found in him.  In his name, we pray. Amen.
Our 2023 Every Day with Jesus readings are taken from Robert Murray M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Calendar. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
Please join us in reading through the scriptures again this year.  We will read the New Testament twice and the Old Testament once this year. M'Cheyne once said, “A man is who he is on his knees, and nothing more.”  Would you pray with me that God will make his word live to us this year?  Let’s not just get through the Bible.  Let it get through to us!

Joyfully,
Duane
