Diary of the Red Pick Up '53
South Africa is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with so much diversity. Many say it is 'One World in One Country' and we pride ourselves to have some of the most interesting and friendly people living here. We would like to take you on a tour to some of our favourite destinations in South Africa.  Places and the wonderful people that live there, places that we feel have something so very special and unique. Places we believe are hidden gems.
So hop aboard and join the Red Pick-Up ‘53 today as we are making a delivery of Kyburg Wine to Café Photo Albert in Prince Albert on the edge of the Central Karoo, ca. 370 km from Stellenbosch.

Our destination takes us along the N1 past Worcester, Matjiesfontein and Laingsburg. Another 45 km on Prince-Albert Road, the R 407, takes us to the town of Prince Albert. This quaint little town with its superb climate and spectacular night skies boasts many authentic Cape Dutch, Karoo and Victorian buildings. 13 of them are National Monuments.
In contrast to the semi-arid Karoo landscape, the town is green and fertile. Thanks to the generous run-offs from the Swartberg mountains springs, peaches, apricots, grapes, figs and olives thrive in the area and together with Karoo lamb and local cheese you’re set for a gourmet treat. The renowned Gay’s Guernsey Dairy makes a number of delicious cheeses and yoghurt.
Just think of the famous Karoo-lamb, lean and full of flavours of the local grass and bushes these animals feed on. A roast of lamb paired with a Kyburg Merlot or Cabernet, delicious! Or should we start with a cheese platter paired with a Kyburg 33 Latitude or Shiraz.
In the middle of town, along the main road we find Café Photo Albert and owners Sabine and Stephan Jaggy gladly relieve us of our load of Kyburg wine.  Here visitors are treated to a delicious meal pared with Kyburg wine of your choice.  The restaurant’s chef is a young local lady who started working in the kitchen without any previous training. Today she certainly lacks no skills and is known to prepare meat to perfection. A crispy Roeschti, in-season vegetables and even a Swiss cheese fondue count among her specialities. A meander through Stephan’s highly artistic photo exhibition will prove to be the ideal grand finale to a great meal. You might be inspired to purchase one of his landscape-photos on canvas.

We would definitely be able to spend a couple of days here in this lovely Prince Albert.
Tomorrow, after spending the night in one of the superb guesthouses, we will load some of the local specialities and head off to traverse the mighty Swartberg Pass. What an adventure!
Wish you were here…
