| Mission Moment: Janet Acosta Rings The Bell
| |
One year after fearing she was going to die and with a shattered spirit, Janet Acosta joyously rang the victory bell at Memorial Medical Cancer Center – encouraged and cheered on by family, friends and staff. The celebratory moment marks the end of a very trying, 14-month chapter in her battle with breast cancer, one that wasn’t on the right path until Janet transferred her care to Memorial.
“The program that Memorial Medical Center Oncology currently has here locally is outstanding. They have resources, they’re accredited, and they’ve helped two generations of my family,” Janet said. “They truly care. They truly care about the individual, they truly care about your treatment, and they become your family.”
Congratulations, Janet. It is our privilege to walk with you and care for you on this journey. We are so proud of you and thank you for sharing your story with so many others.

Ronald McDonald Family Room's 10th Anniversary

As we commemorate the 10th anniversary of our Ronald McDonald Family Room here at MMC, we reflect on a very special decade of providing comfort and care.
This unique space is the only such room in Southern New Mexico and has provided a much-needed respite for families with children receiving care at our hospital. It’s a place for families to find comfort, grab a snack, or just take a moment to breathe, all while staying only steps away from their little one.
“We are really proud that we’ve been able to come together to create this space where families can come to find some comfort, some support and maybe a little bit of peace,” said Laura Pierce, People Services Director at MMC and Board Member for Ronald McDonald House Charities of El Paso. “This room is a shining example of what happens when a hospital and community come together for families.”
“Ronald McDonald House El Paso is extremely proud to mark our 10th anniversary of serving families in Las Cruces through the Family Room at Memorial Medical Center,” said Thelma Ramos, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of El Paso. “We’re excited to continue growing our programs locally. Here’s to many more celebrations to come for this very special space.”
As we celebrate this milestone together, we are reminded of the countless families who have found a home away from home within these walls. Here’s to continuing our mission of ensuring loved ones are nearby for many more years to come!

In this video spotlight, Rhesa Rodriguez, RN, walks us through how Memorial Medical Center’s Specialty Care Transport Team works to safely transport newborns and children from across in Southern New Mexico to our hospital for the specialized care they need. This service provides a lifeline for families and critical access healthcare facilities across our greater region – from Silver City to Truth or Consequences to Ruidoso.
Memorial is home to the only Specialty Care Transport Team and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Southern New Mexico, staffed by highly skilled professionals dedicated to providing safe, compassionate care throughout every journey.

| The Leader In Local Cardiac Care:
Pioneering Heart Failure Treatment

We’re thrilled to announce a major achievement in heart failure care — our team has successfully completed the first Barostim implant in the history of New Mexico and the greater El Paso region. This groundbreaking procedure was a collaborative effort led by Dr. Kalyan Vunnamadala, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Dr. M. Rizwan Sardar, Interventional Cardiologist. Together, they’ve brought a life-changing option to heart failure patients who previously had few alternatives.
Barostim is the world’s first FDA-approved neuromodulation device designed to improve symptoms in patients with systolic heart failure who may not be receiving adequate symptom relief from medications alone. The therapy uses the body’s nervous system to help restore balance and improve cardiovascular function.
While the device does not reverse heart failure, studies show it can improve quality of life, increase life expectancy and reduce hospitalizations.
Unlike other heart failure device therapies, Barostim contains no hardware in the heart or vasculature. The device uses gentle electrical pulses to stimulate baroreceptors —specialized nerve endings in the carotid artery. By activating these natural sensors, the device helps the body regulate heart function, blood pressure, and overall cardiovascular health.

As the leader in heart care for Southern New Mexico, our investment in a fourth catheterization lab at our hospital reflects our continued commitment to bringing advanced specialty care closer to home for the communities we serve. With this brand-new cath lab, we are strengthening our ability to respond quickly, diagnose accurately, and treat patients with advanced, minimally invasive procedures that save lives and improve quality of life.
This new lab marks the next chapter in delivering exceptional heart, vascular, electrophysiology, and interventional radiology care to our community. A huge thank you to our dedicated physicians, leadership, nurses, technologists, and support staff whose expertise and teamwork have made this progress possible. This is what advancing care looks like.
