Tagging Large Dolphin for Conservation
Dolphinfish Research Program
While the conservation measures that the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council are considering for amendment 10 of the Dolphin/Wahoo Fishery Management plan are certainly steps forward for the conservation of dolphin, we are still dissatisfied that none of the other U.S. fishery councils (Gulf of Mexico, Mid-Atlantic Bight, and Caribbean Sea) are following suit.  Fortunately, the Dolphinfish Research Program (DRP) exists, allowing anglers to push the conservation of the species on their own accord.  Since 2002, 40% of all fish tagged and released have been larger than 20", which is larger than the 20" minimum size established for the South Atlantic Bight.  Furthermore, through angler participation in the DRP, tag deployments show that 22-24" fish represent a commonly tagged size, suggesting that perhaps the minimum size could be raised and/or established where the regulation does not exist.  Fishing teams from all major tagging zones have contributed to tagging large dolphin to push the conservation of the species as well as increase the health of pelagic food webs.  Increasing or establishing a minimum size for dolphin will protect fish of spawning size before they are caught and also ensure fish reproduce many more times as they pack on a few more pounds to become filet-worthy fish.  Click here to read more about how anglers push conservation of this species through the DRP.
51 Recaptures & Counting in 2019
DRP General Movement Patters
In 2019, 51 dolphin movements have been archived for the Dolphinfish Research Program.  This is the third highest amount of movements ever recorded in one year for the program.  The top two years in terms of movements recorded were in 2007 and 2009, when 68 and 56, movements were logged, respectively.  Our most recent dolphin recovery was reported at the end of September by Lee Rose of Frankford, DE.  He recaptured a dolphin near Poor Man's Canyon aboard the charter vessel Stalker 14 days after the fish was tagged and released by Captains Chris and David Jobes of the Pair of Docs fishing team.  Youth angler Will Jobes caught and tagged the fish.  This is the only in-region MAB movement logged this year and represents the longest southwesterly movement ever logged for the program in the MAB (see figure below).  The greatest observed time at large for a dolphin recovery in the MAB region is 56 days and no movements have ever been generated outside of the waters near Maryland or New Jersey.  With the DRP now based in Newport, Rhode Island, we aspire to change this next summer with the deployment of a few satellite tags.  Click here to help support that effort to generate new information on the movements and behavior of dolphin in the MAB.

As of today, we have shipped 349 tagging kits to anglers around the world this year!  With the end of 2019 quickly approaching we need to re-establish a budget to help expand the world's largest tagging program for dolphin in 2020.  To help in this effort, purchase a tagging kit from now until the end of the year.  To purchase a tagging kit click the following link dolphintagging.com/kit.
