Welcome Fr. Shanley! Rev. Brian Shanley OP has been named the next president of St. John’s University. Fr. Shanley spent the past 15 years as president of Providence College, where he was a transformational and inspiring leader. He is expected to begin his tenure at St. John’s on February 1, 2021. With the University’s announcement last week, Dean Michael A. Simons shared:
“I’m thrilled that we have found an experienced and successful president from a peer institution to take the helm at this critical time for higher education. I had a chance to meet Fr. Shanley during the search process, and he impressed me as an effective communicator, a thoughtful and collaborative leader, and a caring and decent person. I’m looking forward to working with him in the years ahead, and in particular in the coming months as we navigate the significant challenges facing colleges and universities throughout the country.”

Giving Thanks If this whirlwind of a year has taught us anything it’s that, as strong as we are, we’re stronger together. And, together, this Giving Tuesday, the national day of giving on December 1, 2020, alumni and friends answered the call to support St. John’s Law students who are facing unprecedented challenges. Many thanks to all who gave generously to the Law School’s Stronger Together Campaign.

Publications, Activities, and Achievements Professor Renee Nicole Allen presented her forthcoming UCLA Law Review article, "From Academic Freedom to Cancel Culture: Silencing Black Women in the Legal Academy," at a virtual workshop in the Theorizing Feminist Solidarity and Racial Justice in Academia series.
Professor John Q. Barrett is one of millions who know, love, and learn from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash hit, Hamilton: An American Musical. And now Professor Barrett's essay, "Some Alexander Hamilton, But Not So Much Hamilton, in the New Supreme Court,” is one of 35 essays by leading scholars and lawyers featured in Hamilton and the Law: Reading Today’s Most Contentious Legal Issues through the Hit Musical, a collection edited by Professor Lisa A. Tucker and published by Cornell University Press.
In a BBC Newshour segment on the 75th anniversary of the Nuremberg trials, Professor Barrett discusses (at the 18:25 mark) the role of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, who served as the Chief U.S. Prosecutor at the International Military Tribunal, as well as the significance and legacy of the trials. Professor Barrett, who is writing a biography of Justice Jackson, produces The Jackson List, which is read by many thousands of subscribers around the world who are interested in Justice Jackson and related topics.
The Children's Law Center of New York honored Professor Jennifer Baum, who heads our in-house Child Advocacy Clinic, for her volunteer work on an international child abduction case brought under the Hague Convention in the Eastern District of New York. Professor Baum also spoke at New York Law School recently on the role of the Attorney for the Child in Family Court and State Supreme Court proceedings.
At recent virtual faculty workshops at William & Mary Law School and the Georgetown University Law Center, Professor Anita S. Krishnakumar presented "Cracking the Whole Code Rule," her forthcoming article for the NYU Law Review.
Along with faculty colleagues from Russia, Greece, Canada, Italy, and Israel, Professor Mark L. Movsesian spoke recently at a virtual roundtable on law and religion hosted by Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Meet Our Newest Faculty Members Several years ago, the Law School launched a bold strategic plan anchored by twin goals of academic excellence and student achievement. An important part of that plan is adding new talent to the faculty.
In the last four years, we welcomed six full-time faculty members:
And, now, we’re delighted that Adrián E. Alvarez, Seema Mohapatra, and Marissa Jackson Sow are joining our full-time faculty.
Read all about it.
Mark Your Calendars Our popular First Friday Book Club hosted by Professors Cheryl Wade and Sheldon Evans resumes virtually in the New year on January 8, 2021. The group will discuss The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry (Arnold Rampersad & Hilary Herbold, eds. 2006), which highlights the unique voice and emotions of the African-American community in the 19th and 20th centuries.

- In 2019, once again, our graduates surpassed statewide bar pass average
- 16K+ alumni who give, mentor, and hire
- $20M+ in scholarship awards last year

- 100% of students who wanted to participate in our clinics last year were able to
