Charlottesville ChalkFest:
Community Event This Saturday, Mar. 3

We are thrilled to be a featured nonprofit at this weekend's Charlottesville ChalkFest event. All are invited to join us on Saturday, March 3 at IX Park for this community day to learn more about your neighbors. There will be a free brunch, tapping of a collaborative "Charlottesville Ale" from local brewers, presentations from area nonprofits, and the unveiling of a quick video highlighting the city.
From ChalkFest organizers: "Communities are stronger when we know our neighbors. Chalkfest is a multi-faceted event focused on building conversation and connections and celebrating the people of Charlottesville.
Come for the free community brunch at Three Notch'd Craft Kitchen and Brewery from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. Then stick around for the "Nonprofit Village" from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM. We will have a table of awesome volunteers talking about their experiences as tutors.
You can learn more about all of the day's events by visiting the ChalkFest's Facebook event page. We hope to see you there!

Scrabble Games to Benefit LVCA

Charlottesville Newcomers Scrabble Tournament
Friday, March 2, 6:00 PM, Senior Center - 491 Hillsdale Drive

This is your chance to try out a competitive Scrabble tournament in a relaxed setting! The Newcomers tournament is not so much for newcomers to Scrabble in general, but rather for those who LOVE the game but have never played in a competitive Scrabble tournament. The entry fee of $25 goes to benefit LVCA. Contact Clay Daniel, tournament director, to learn more, 434-262-2030 or clay@clayborne.com.
We were extremely honored to be the beneficiary of "Sunday Scrabble® Showdowns" at Reason Beer, a tasting room and brewery located on Seminole Trail. Each Sunday in February they held Scrabble games to benefit LVCA. If you haven't checked out this new brewery yet, we highly recommend you visit and let them know how much you appreciate their support of literacy in Charlottesville! -- Reason Beer - 180 Seminole Trail, Suite 290

Guest Speakers in February Workshops

Each month we strive to provide professional development opportunities for our tutors through engaging workshops that benefit both students and tutors. This month we welcomed two guest speakers who brought new topics and prospectives to our workshops. We are grateful for their knowledge and hope to have more guest speakers throughout the year.
On Thursday, February 22 Westley Kern from Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) led a workshop for our students about public transportation. The students learned how to navigate the city through the use of buses and trolleys. They read bus routes, learned how to buy bus passes and how to properly board and exit a bus. CAT will continue to offer these educational workshops for our students.
Cherry Stewart, the Thomas Jefferson Adult and Career Services Volunteer Coordinator and ESL instructor, led a workshop for our tutors on Tuesday, February 27 on the topic of Immigrant Stress and Learning. She highlighted the kinds of trauma our immigrant students may have faced and how this stress affects learning.
