Drawings with Hearthwood

Drawing1 Drawing2
In January, five tutors volunteered to lead a class at Hearthwood Apartment Complex of older refugees from Bhutan and Burma. The class is both for English instruction and social interaction.
Recently, local artist Susan Patrick came to lead the students in drawing pictures of their homelands. Patrick, also a regular volunteer with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), has put together a traveling exhibit of artwork by refugees of their homelands. Drawings by our students will be on display during Patrick’s fall exhibit. You can see more pictures from this drawing class on our Flickr page
Voices of Adult Learners

We invite you to attend the 2017 Voices of Adult Learners Reading and Reception on the evening of Thursday, March 23.
The Voices of Adult Learners is a celebration bringing together adults from literacy, GED and ESL education programs to share their compelling stories. Students enrolled in literacy and adult education programs have composed a variety of writings about family, work, education and life changes. This is a yearly Virginia Festival of the Book event, free and open to the public.

Students in the Spotlight (literally)

Three of our students became television stars last weekend when they agreed to be in a Literacy Volunteers commercial. They were interviewed about their experiences and the goals they have achieved thanks to their tutors.
Light House Studio's Commercial Production class wrote, directed and filmed the commercial which should be ready to share later this month.
