Hockaday Highlights

We had an amazing Spirit Day yesterday at school.  The Student Council Athletics Board planned a One Hockaday Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) spirit rally to celebrate the accomplishments of our fall varsity athletic teams and to cheer them on as they prepare to compete in the upcoming SPC tournament. Go Daisies!
Recently, the students enjoyed a successful Community Service Candy Drive after the festive Halloween holiday, a Dance performance for the 4th and 5th graders at Gooch Elementary, an #IDEAfestival to discuss food deserts in Dallas, and a successful robotics competition.  Please enjoy reading more about the Hockaday Highlights below.
As a reminder, we have an Upper School Parent Visit on Tuesday, November 14 from 8:30-10:00 a.m. and a Financial Information Night on Monday, December 11 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. We encourage you and your daughter to visit our campus for a tour, a parent visit, or a student shadow day.  Please visit our website to register. Remember that you can always visit our website, for up to the minute news stories and Admission information.

#IDEAfestival 2017

The IDEA Lab Leadership Team hosted #IDEAfestival2017 on October 28.  The IDEA Lab serves as a maker space for students and faculty to use to study, tinker, meet together and to discover ideas. Watch the video by clicking below or you may click here.

The Executive Director of TR Hoover Community Center and Senior Shreya Gunuluka presented to the students on what it's like to live in a food desert. Everyone was encouraged to think about how innovation can improve our community, and the topic of conversation focused on the food-desert problem in Dallas and many other urban-areas.

Ms. Katie Krummeck, Director of the Design Innovation Gymnasium at SMU, lead students and faculty in some of her renowned human-centered design workshops. With this training, Hockaday students hope to gain an understanding of the root cause of this food desert issue, recognize the lack of fresh groceries in many households, and in turn, design impactful solutions to solve the problem.

As a part of the design thinking process—a process that the IDEA festival utilized throughout—attendees were encouraged to ask questions that begin with the words, HOW MIGHT WE? How might we find a solution and make things better? Attendees also participated in a food-assembly line to package snack-bags to be delivered to the children at TR Hoover Community Center.

Dartmouth Selects Hockaday Alumna as Starting Goalkeeper

This season, the Dartmouth Field Hockey team unexpectedly lost one of their goalkeepers, and while talking to friends, Emily Wechsler '14 mentioned she had played goalie for Hockaday's field hockey team. The next thing she knew, she was trying out for a spot as a back-up goalkeeper and made the Dartmouth team! Shortly afterward, Dartmouth's starting goalkeeper sustained a concussion, and Emily started and played in three full games this season! As a result of their win over the University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth News reported: “The offense will get all the attention for their flashy scoring totals, but the backbone of Wednesday’s victory was senior goalkeeper Emily Wechsler and her nine saves. Several of those stops were the result of acrobatic plays from the team’s newest member to help her earn her first career win.” Read the full story here.

Robotics Team Advances to State Finals

This past Saturday, Hockaday's Robotics team competed in the Dallas BEST competition and advanced to the state finals again this year! The girls took first place in the notebook and software categories and first place in non - UIL (University Interscholastic Leagu) teams. We look forward to supporting them as they move forward to the state level in the coming weeks!

Second Graders Learn about Service Dogs

Watch the video by clicking below or you may click here.  Hockaday girls make a commitment to serving others and improving the community in which they live. Service ranges from weekly tutoring at DISD schools, to reading to abused animals, to building Habitat for Humanity homes.  The volunteer work for students covers a broad spectrum of needs and organizations. Our girls are excited about community service! Every week, they are learning from these unique experiences outside of the classroom. Students are encouraged to build meaningful relationships with organizations, understand the issues like hunger, homelessness, and domestic violence that they encounter in their volunteer work, and to reflect on the service they’re involved in and the impact they have on their community.
