February in the Garden

January was a bit of a sock in the jaw, wasn’t it? Every single flower that was open on January 10th (and there were plenty) was frozen solid by suppertime on the 11th. Let’s hope February doesn’t give us a repeat performance. Not to worry, though—UBC Botanical Garden has plenty of cold-hardy broad-leaved evergreens that roll with the punches.

As spring approaches, we invite you to witness the beautiful blooming of Magnolias at the garden. We have two exciting events coming up on March 23rd - one is a Magnolia walk with our curator Andy Hill, and another is a Magnolia performance with artist Celeste Snowber.

Shop in the Garden opening March 1st

To celebrate the arrival of spring, the first 20 visitors will receive a special gift, and there will be exclusive discounts throughout the day. Douglas Justice, associate director of the UBC Botanical Garden talks to Citynews about how many plants are flowering early because of the cold snap we saw in October. But the daffodils aren’t here to stay. Flowers can not tolerate the freezing temperatures we saw in the last week, so they’re going to get frosted off. Generally speaking, those daffodils that came up — the bulbs — they’re far enough down in the ground that they’re not going to be affected. Watch the full video here

Welcome New Staff

The Garden is excited to welcome Derek Churchill, as interim Principal Horticulture Training Program Instructor. Derek is a seasoned Red Seal Landscape Horticulturist with two decades of experience in the landscape trade. With a long-term focus on plants and soil, Derek is able to impart his of knowledge to ensure the application of horticultural best management practices. His diverse background in landscaping spans the maintenance and installation of residential, commercial, and public spaces.

HTP Program

Christmas Tree Chipping

In partnership with SPEC School Gardens Program, we recycled your pre-loved Christmas trees this year and raised $825.30. Thank you so much for supporting our cause - your contribution directly supports students at Britannia Community Elementary School. Donations will contribute to the replacement of damaged garden beds, compost material and the creation of pollinator-friendly habitat.

Daylight hours are shorter, and the garden's light fade quickly, arrive early, as there are adventures & memories to be made.
