Dear honors alum,
Welcome to the very first edition of The Alumni PHiL, a newsletter for alumni of the YSU Honors College. Whether you graduated from the University Scholars and Honors Program or the Honors College, you are a valued part of the honors family.
This newsletter offers a glimpse into the honors experience and shows how you, our alumni, continue to serve. This edition serves as a thank you to the many alumni who have contributed in recent years and invites alumni to join us for an upcoming virtual event and to consider sharing their expertise by teaching an honors seminar.

Meet the designer
We asked our students to create a header design, and the one featured above by Avery Jones was selected! Avery is a sophomore majoring in Chemical Engineering. She is also one of two students who are designing the Honors College Magazine, coming out next spring.

Meet the Editor
Macey Redmond is a junior and is majoring in Integrated Mathematics Education. She has wanted to become a teacher for as long as she can remember and is eager to share her love for math in her own classroom one day. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her loved ones, watching classic films, being outdoors, and writing. One of the ways she explores her passion for writing is by sending letters to her brother while the two of them pursue their dreams in different places.
"My older brother, Parker, and I have been close since the day I was born. He was my first best friend and still is my biggest role model. As close as we were growing up, I didn't realize how lucky we were to have each other and it was really hard on me when he left for college. Luckily, he chose to attend Westminster College, just a few minutes down the road. He is a senior majoring in Biology, with a minor in English, and is currently applying to Med-Schools. I am so proud of how hard he worked to be where he is, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous for the day he goes off to Med-School. Although him and I are pursuing careers in the STEM field, we both have a passion for writing. To keep in touch while he is away, we are exploring our creative outlets and sending each other hand-written letters. I always look forward to hearing from him."

A message from the dean
Grateful. Appreciative. Thankful.
These are the sentiments of our current honors students portrayed in the gratitude video below. Students reflect upon the ways in which alumni have supported honors students' academic, career, and personal growth. Listen to the experiences of how the alumni positively impacted their lives. Thank you to all our alumni family! The depth of our gratitude for your selfless giving back to YSU honors is immeasurable.
With much appreciation,

Call for Honors Seminars
We are always looking for new and innovative courses and seminars to offer our students. And what better audience to ask for ideas than our amazing alumni?! In fact, this Fall, 25 alumni volunteered to share their expertise and provided content for Intro to Honors (pictured below). Thank you for your contributions!
We are inviting all alumni to consider teaching an honors seminar, either in person or remotely. Courses typically meet once a week for an hour, but can also be flexibly scheduled. Ideas don’t need to be completely developed. If you are at all interested, please let us know by clicking the button and completing the form below.

Honors College Storytime
Honors College Storytime airs Mondays at 6 pm on our YouTube channel. The program features honors students and alumni reading a variety of children's books to educate and entertain young viewers. The program was created to aid with literacy and learning in the community in response to the educational challenges posed by the pandemic.
Honors alumna, Chisa Echendu, who graduated in 2000 with a degree in Chemistry, and her daughters of Houston, Texas, are pictured above reading for Storytime. Thanks to Chisa and all the alumni, including Angela Ireland, Samantha Kelecava, Lexi Rager, Nick Tancabel, Hunter Thomas, who already submitted! A new episode airs each Monday.

We invite you and your families to create your own videos of your favorite stories. Here is how you can participate:
- Choose a variety of children’s books that will take approximately 20 minutes in total to read. Books should be appropriate for elementary school aged audiences or younger. Holiday selections are welcome!
- Select a cozy spot in your home with a neutral background.
- Prop up your phone (in horizontal position), camera, or computer and record you and/or your family members reading. Children are welcome to join in the video for an opportunity to serve together as a family.
- Upload your video here.

"We came up with Storytime as a way to help parents who could benefit from having access to high quality programming for their children one night a week. Though every family's needs vary, this is one small way our students can serve creatively and safely and make an impact on the community."
Amy Cossentino, Dean of the YSU Honors College
