Event Recap: A Celebration of Culture, Community, and Inclusivity at the Lunar New Year Market

With crisp and sunny weather on our side, UBC Botanical Garden hosted its third annual Lunar New Year Market on January 25 and 26, marking the Year of the Wood Snake in a bigger, and brighter way. The event successfully brought together visitors, vendors, and performers from all backgrounds to celebrate this important tradition, fostering cultural appreciation, a sense of belonging, and a deeper connection to the Asian Garden.

UBC Botanical Garden was proud to provide a space where locals could come together—not just to enjoy the festivities but to experience the richness of Lunar New Year traditions.

Using Science to Inform Gardening Decisions

Gardening has long been an activity where science has informed its practitioners. Consider the decisions about what plant might thrive in a particular place, or how to manage a particular pest in as benign a way as possible. Using science at some level, whether observational or through experimental findings, (hopefully) has helped you to be a more successful gardener by helping to answer these and other questions.

February in the Garden

Few garden plants are as tough as the hollies. The plant that comes to most minds (locally, at least) when holly is mentioned is undoubtedly Ilex aquifolium, the English holly, a species with countless ornamental cultivars popular for residential planting. One of the great things about English holly, and cold-hardy Ilex species in general, is that the berries (the fruits are technically drupes), remain firmly attached to their stalks well after they are fully ripe. That means they persist on the plants well into winter, and also have a good post-harvest lifetime—which is one of the reason branches are harvested for Yule decorations.

Climate Emergency Week at UBC seeks to convene and energize communities of climate action at UBC. Join our events, workshops and activities, and take transformative action for justice, people, and our planet.

UBC Botanical Garden will host a walking tour in the garden to learn about how gardens are adapting to climate change and making long-term decisions to support trees, plants, and biodiversity. With hands-on activities, participants will learn about strategies and approaches for protecting nature in a changing climate.
