Hockaday Highlights
Thank you all for joining us at various admission events this year and seeking to learn more about Hockaday. We believe in our mission and are intentional about developing resilient, confident women who are educated to lead lives of purpose and impact. In this, our last edition of Hockaday Highlights for this admission season, we hope you enjoy a glimpse of Hockaday campus life.

Over the past few weeks, we have enjoyed listening to the Upper School students present their speeches during the Student Council Elections. We have also had guest speakers such as Wendy Davis and Council Member Jennifer Staubach Gates on campus. Our sixth graders are preparing to present their research on rocks and minerals. The seventh graders have been busy testing the electric power output of wind turbines they built and designed and the eighth graders just finished building self-sustaining ecosystems inside sealed plastic bottles. Check out the eighth graders on Instagram! One of our Form I students recently won first place in her age category at the USA Climbing Bouldering Youth National Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. Read more here. Hockaday is alive with activity every day. There are more stories about our students below.

Again, we thank you for spending time with us. We have enjoyed getting to know you and your family during this admission season. Next week, Friday, March 9, you will receive an admission notification via email from Hockaday in the late afternoon. In the meantime, You may also visit our website to read up to the minute news stories and other admission information.
All my best,

Maryanna Phipps
Director of Admission and Enrollment Management

Engineering/STEM in Prekindergarten

More than a week-long event, "Engineers Week" is really a year-round commitment to making a difference. Hockaday celebrated "Engineers Week" last week. The girls read a story and then built bridges to solve a problem from the story. Our littlest Daisies learned to celebrate how engineers make a difference in our world and increased their understanding about the need for engineers. The classroom activities brought engineering to life for them!

Changemakers: Women in Politics

Both Jennifer Staubach Gates and Wendy Davis have made a significant impact on their constituencies, their communities, and helped shape politics today. During their visits to campus, these women shared their insights about the inner workings of government today. Our students were able to ask questions and have productive discussions about how they can do their part to make a positive impact on the world around them.

In March, Mrs. Laura Day, Director of Service Learning, will offer an informative question and answer meeting about how our girls can get involved in civic organizations and learn more about the process of government and the opportunities that exist for them both now and in the future. Read more here.

Hockaday Model UN Competes at Georgetown University

Recently, Hockaday Model UN participated in the largest Model UN in North America.  The conference is sponsored by Georgetown University and the girls were delighted to see that some of their committee chairs were former Hockaday Model UN students, now at Georgetown, who had participated in the very same conference while at Hockaday. Martha Winslow '17, Lainey Giles '16, and Suzette Kane '16 were on the Model UN committee.

Alumnae in the Arts

Every year, we ask alumnae who work in the arts fields to present their work to our current students. Last year, we focused on the culinary arts and this year, we are focused on the art of television and film. The March program will feature a special exhibition spotlighting the work of various alumnae who have behind-the-scenes careers in the television and film industry. Among the alumnae are:
  • Barbara Jaffe '69, Executive Vice President, Technology Operations (Retired), Home Box Office
  • Suki Hawley ’87, Director, Editor, and Documentary Filmmaker, RUMUR Production Studio
  • Sasha Stewart ’05, Television Writer
  • Athena Wickham ’98, Emmy Award-Nominated Television Producer

Hockadaisy is One of Five Finalists

Sophie Dawson, Form III, was one of five finalists in the 2018 Texas Poetry Out Loud competition, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and the Texas Commission on the Arts. Sophie competed against 24 other students from across Texas at the Bullock Texas State History Museum reciting “Propositions” by Stephen Dun, “On Monsieur's Departure” by Queen Elizabeth I, and "Undivided Attention" by Taylor Mali. Congratulations, Sophie!
