Alumnus Jericho Brown Selected COLAEHD Distinguished Alumnus of the Year at Gala
|
|
|
Creative Writing Workshop alumnus Jericho Brown '02 pulled double duty at UNO's Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni Gala on Nov. 9. Brown was presented with the college's Distinguished Alumnus of the Year award, and he also presented some of his original poetry to the crowd of nearly 400 people at the National WWII Museum.
Brown delighted the audience with readings of a few poems from his three published books of poetry. For his books, he has won a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for Poetry, an American Book Award, a Whiting Award, and a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.

UNO Graduate Student Bailey Bullock Named Outstanding Transportation Center Student of the Year
|
University of New Orleans graduate student Bailey Bullock has been named a 2023 University Transportation Center Outstanding Student of the Year for her work in multi-modal transportation, as well as her academic performance, professionalism and leadership. Bullock, who is pursuing a master’s degree in transportation, will be recognized by the U.S. Department of Transportation during a January ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Planning & Urban Studies Professors Present at National Conference
|
The Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) sponsors a panel each year at the national conferences of both the American Planning Association (APA) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP).
This year, Dr. Michelle Thompson was the moderator and presenter on the ACSP 2023 Session: "Skills for Future Planners" with Drs. Melissa Schively Slotterback and Justin Hollander. Thompson focused on analytical skills and tools to explain the research and critical analysis skills for preparing and conducting research; quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection, analysis and forecasting; methods of geo-spatial analysis, mapping and data visualization; and data analytics and urban technology.

Students Pack The Cove for Political Science Instructor's Live Podcast
|
UNO Political Science adjunct professor Michael Pickering is the creator and host of the short-form global news show "the LowFi Poli Sci Podcast." This semester, he hosted two shows live at The Cove and invited students, faculty, staff and alumni to attend.
The second live show on Nov. 9 featured Dr. Robert Worth. More than 100 students, faculty and alumni attended the event that started with a brief meet and greet. Michael did his high-energy podcast, followed by an hour of mingling. A good time was had by all!

| University of New Orleans Educator Prep Programs Recognized for National Excellence
|
The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) announced that the University of New Orleans School of Education has received reaccreditation for its educator preparation programs. The fall 2023 review by the CAEP Accreditation Council resulted in 34 educator preparation providers receiving accreditation, bringing the total to 551 providers approved under the CAEP Accreditation Standards—rigorous, nationally-recognized standards that were developed to ensure excellence in educator preparation programs.

Scholarship Honoring Longtime History Professor Günter Bischof Will Support Student Research and Travel
|
A new endowed scholarship honoring longtime University of New Orleans history professor Günter Bischof will help support student research and travel. Bischof’s three children—Andrea, Marcus and Alexander—made lead gifts totaling more than $33,000. Contributions from other family members and friends bring the scholarship balance to more than $45,000.

Anthony Martino '20 is a third-grade teacher at Arlene Meraux Elementary School in Chalmette, and Jewel Morgan teaches at Andrew Jackson Middle School, also in Chalmette.

| Dr. Decina Hebert Rodriguez (Ph.D., 2016) was named as the 2023-24 Principal of the Year by the Lafourche Parish Public Schools. She will be competing to be recognized as the Louisiana Principal of the Year to be announced this summer.

Tiffany Ball (BS 2023) was named the Outstanding New Teacher at Ruppel Academy in Jefferson Parish. She was presented the award by Ruppel Academy Principal Emily Miller (M.Ed. 2013).
