NETRF Kicks off its 2022 Year-End Annual Appeal

Hear from NET patients, researchers & caregivers about what

your support means to them

Imagine if we could close out 2022 by funding a young scientist with a promising “big idea” for a cure to NETs? There many scientists seeking funding for their exciting research, and they could hold the key to the next important advance in NET research.
But we can't fund them without YOUR support.

Click here or on the above image to meet some people living with NETs, their family members, and the researchers who know the importance of research and patient education. They’d like you to join them in supporting NETRF during our 2022 Year-End Appeal.

NET research is underfunded as much as 10-fold, so NETRF must fill the gap.  We humbly ask you to include NETRF in your year-end giving plans. Your gift will enable us to maintain momentum in groundbreaking neuroendocrine cancer research.

Thank you for supporting NETRF and helping us to build a better future for the NET patients and their families.

Researcher update: Drs. Michelle Kang Kim & Minah Kim

Cleveland Clinic appointed Michelle Kang Kim, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in their Digestive Disease & Surgery Institute. Dr. Kim is the first woman to hold the position at Cleveland Clinic, and she is among the fewer than 10% of gastroenterology division chiefs nationally who are female.
"There aren’t many women in gastroenterology, so when it comes to issues like promotions, leadership and gender equity, there are a limited number of people who feel comfortable raising questions about whether there is enough representation. I’ve received a tremendous number of messages not just of encouragement and pride, but also of thanks for being a visible female leader," said Dr. Kang Kim.
Dr. Kang Kim received a 2020 NETRF Pilot Research Award for her work using stage and tumor grade data, and innovative digital image analyses to evaluate how morphometric feature analysis may improve clinicians’ ability to predict the outcomes of patients with gastroenteropancreatic NETs.
Read Dr. Kang Kim's profile here.

Dr. Minah Kim recently shared what receiving NETRF support has meant to her:
"I appreciate the NETRF support, which helped our research move in the right direction; as NETs are rare cancers, it was hard to convince reviewers about the importance of studying this disease when I first submitted NIH grants, especially as an early-stage investigator. However, after much effort, they understood and gave a perfect score (percentile 1 in NCI). This outstanding result wouldn't be possible without NETRF support," said Dr. Kim.
Dr. Kim received a 2019 NETRF Pilot Research award for her work using a pancreatic NET mouse model to determine the significance of Angiopoietin-2(Ang2)/Tie2 signaling on liver metastasis and anti-VEGF drug efficacy.
NETRF is proud to support these outstanding researchers.

NETRF Patient Guide

NETRF wants to get our Neuroendocrine Cancer Guide for Patients and Families in the hands of those who need it.

KNOW YOUR NETs Highlight: Treatment Sequencing Tumor Board

Patients with NET cancer benefit from a specialized approach to care. A multidisciplinary tumor board can focus discussions efficiently, provide a forum to advance care, and apply neuro endocrine-related clinical guidelines with the goal to decide on the best possible treatment plan for a patient. Watch our Treatment Sequencing Tumor Board by Dr. Xavier Keutgen, Dr. Andy Liao, Dr. Osmanuddin Ahmed, Courtney Lawhn Heath and Dr. Jennifer Chan from our 2022 KNOW YOUR NETs Patient Education Conference.

NETWise Highlight Episode 11: Adolesents and Young Adults

Facing a diagnosis of neuroendocrine cancer, when you are a teenager or young adult, presents unique medical, social, financial, and even fertility challenges. How do you navigate the healthcare system? Who do you tell about your illness and when? Will you be able to have a career? Can you have children?

In this episode, hear from NET experts Dr. Jaydira Del Rivero and Dr. Manisha Shah about the diagnosis of NETs and prognosis in young people.  Kalen Fletcher, a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, talks about young people’s emotional reactions to living with cancer.  Dr. Mark Lewis, a patient and physician, shares his story. We also hear from Sophia Hurtado and her mother Maryanne about Sophia’s courage.

9th Annual NET Fundraiser in honor of Debbie Brickner

As another summer came to a close, the riders of Biking for Debbie are now Hiking for Debbie!
This is the 9th year that Vicki Dailey has organized her community to take on a physical challenge in honor of her sister, Debbie Brickner, who continues to persevere through her NET journey. Hikers met up at Oregon Ridge Park in Hunt Valley, MD, and raised $1,790 to bring their grand total to just over $15,000.
Vicki said "It was a beautiful day, and we had 13 total hikers!"
Whether your community is large or small, athletic, adventurous, or crafty, every effort to support NETRF is greatly appreciated and we want you know that $.90 of EVERY dollar raised goes right back to education and research supporting therapies and treatment to build a brighter future for NET patients!
