An Embodied Faith for Lent
This year our church is walking through some suggested Lenten disciplines as we reconnect with each other and seek to embody our faith in God made flesh. Our youth heard about the origins of Lent this past Sunday, as well as what it should and shouldn't be in order to honor God and draw us closer. Our youth ministry has our own list of weekly disciplines which parallel the church-wide list and connect with that week's sermon. If a student particularly connects with something they encounter or learn this Lent, we'd love to hear about it!
•1st Week: Read Philipians 2:1-8. Why didn’t Jesus cling tightly to glory? Get out a sheet of paper and list the ways you’ve been blessed (talents, gifts, education, resources, etc.). How can these be used to bless others? Pick at least one small way and do it this week.
•2nd Week: Think about someone who expressed a tough low recently during “highs and lows” at Engage Bible study. Take some time to pray for them, and then send them a message of encouragement. If you haven’t been lately, commit to coming this next week.
•3rd Week: Cultivate a new habit. Pick one day to be off social media or messaging apps. Use the extra time to read the Bible. If you can’t figure out where to start, read today’s sermon text (Luke 13:1-9) and use the methods we talk about in youth Bible study.
•4th Week: Research the term “food desert” and find a map of food deserts in our area. How different would your life be if you simply lived somewhere else? Spend 5 minutes in prayer for those facing food insecurity and asking what God would have you do to help others.
•5th Week: Volunteer to help with dinner on a night you weren’t already obligated to do so. As you help, think about a time someone unexpectedly served you and what it meant.
•6th Week: Commit to attending our Holy Week activities, including at least one church-wide event. We do best the things we do together!
