Valparaiso University
center for INNOVATION in teaching, assessment, and learning

April 22, 2025
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome back, we hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend. It was nice to see the sun out and temperatures on the rise. With Spring finally upon us (we hope anyway), CITAL brings you the next installment of our newsletter. In this issue, we begin by focusing on a few examples of the experiential learning component in the new Valparaiso University Experience (VUE) courses. Next, we highlight our newest cohort of faculty to attend and complete the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop offered earlier this semester.
Recently, the CITAL team was able to accompany Valpo faculty to the Midwest SoTL Conference, and we highlight the presentations below. Finally, we share some information about Khanmigo, a new AI teaching assistant tool available in Canvas, while also providing important information about the upcoming migration. Thank you all, and please reach out with any questions.
Sincerely,
The CITAL Team (Ed, Gina, and Cindy)

What VUE Students are Doing for Fieldwork

One of the distinctive features of the VUE (Valparaiso University Experience) courses that have replaced CORE is Academic Experiential Learning, otherwise known as VUE Fieldwork.

Since this is the first year of the new VUE program, we thought we would give you just a sample of some of the many intriguing leadership and service projects our students have been doing this year.

Congratulations to our Quality Matters certified faculty!

Eleven more faculty members participated in this year's first  Quality Matters workshop at Valpo: Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR). See the photo below. These faculty learned about the underlying principles behind the QM Rubric and the critical elements of QM's quality assurance process for designing online and hybrid courses. Each workshop participant earned the QM certificate. This QM credential is quite a professional achievement for them and an asset for Valpo. Please join CITAL in giving kudos to these individuals for their success and achievement of the APPQMR certification. Look for future announcements for more QM workshop offerings coming soon this summer and fall at Valpo.

Valpo Faculty Present at Midwest SoTL Conference 2025

Each year CITAL sponsors several Valpo faculty and staff to attend the annual Midwest Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) conference at Indiana University, South Bend. On Friday, April 11, fourteen faculty and staff attended this year’s conference. The theme was “Care, Kindness, and Creativity” and the keynote speaker was Cate Denial, author of A Pedagogy of Kindness.
There were two Valpo presentations at the conference. Natalie Krivas and Stacy Hoult ran a session on "From Compassion to Action: The Solutionary Way." Sedefka Beck, Jon Bull, and Diego Piedra put together a panel on “The Role of AI in Teaching and Learning.” Below are some photos from the event.

Khan Academy - Khanmigo

Get to Know Khanmigo

Khanmigo is a new AI assistant tool included in Valpo's Canvas subscription. Too often, AI models start with an empty chat window, with no context or starting point. While the Khanmigo platform uses a base model, it is specifically tailored to the needs of faculty. Khanmigo provides scaffolded support to aid in creating course materials, brainstorming new ideas, rubric generation, and more. This intentional approach to creativity, along with privacy measures, enhances the power of the tool. See below for resources.
