If you start your day with a homemade smoothie, you can kick off National Tea Day by incorporating Rooibos tea in your healthy drink.
When adding Rooibos to your smoothie, you can expect a pleasantly sweet, nutty and earthy taste. To include Rooibos in your smoothie, simply steep a tea bag in boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes, remove and let the tea cool before adding to your blender.
Doing this not only changes the flavour of your smoothie, but it also makes your drink even healthier due to the high antioxidant content the tea has.

Do you like getting creative in the kitchen? Well, thanks to Ina Paarman, you can breath new life into your favourite muffin recipe!
They call this the “Rooibos method”. Instead of pouring boiling water over the raisins and/or fruit required in a muffin recipe, one uses ¾ cup (180 ml) of Rooibos tea for soaking. After that, you simply add the tea to the dough. You can of course add Rooibos tea to any muffin recipe, whether it contains fruit or not, by merely replacing some of the liquid content with Rooibos tea.

Looking for a truly South African recipe for dessert? How about trying this recipe for Rooibos and gingerbread pudding? Seeing as autumn is making its way across the country, the warming spice and soothing Rooibos makes for a lovely comfort dish that your friends and family will simply love.

Ingredients:
- ⅔ loaf sliced white bread
- 4 tea bags Rooibos tea
- 1 cup hot water
- 4 large eggs
- ½ cup butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ginger powder
- pinch of salt
- 4 cups milk
- ¼ cup dried / crystallised ginger slices (cut into small cubes)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup flaked almonds (optional)

Method:
- Preheat oven to 180°C.
- Butter a 35 x 20 cm roaster or baking pan.
- Add the rooibos tea bags to the hot water and let steep for 10 minutes.
- In a large measuring jug, combine the eggs, butter, cinnamon, ginger powder and salt with a whisk.
- Add in all the milk and mix together.
- Remove the crusts from the bread and cut the bread slices into halves. Add the first layer of bread into the prepared roaster. Position the bread slices at a 45-degree angle and allow them to overlap with each other.
- Pour half the rooibos tea over the first layer of bread.
- Sprinkle half the ginger slices and half of the brown sugar evenly over the bread.
- Pour half the milk mixture over the first layer, ensuring the bread is well covered.
- Add the second layer of bread and pour the remaining rooibos tea over the second layer.
- Sprinkle the remaining ginger slices and brown sugar. Pour the rest of the milk mixture.
- As an extra topping, add flaked almonds to the top of your bread pudding.
- Place the pudding in the centre of the oven and bake for 40 minutes.

The popular lifestyle website, Cape Town Etc., recently published an article in which they set out the top reasons why you should seriously consider drinking more Rooibos tea than you already do. On National Tea Day, we couldn’t agree more with this sentiment!
Some of the main reasons for drinking more Rooibos are that drinking this tea regularly can aid in combatting high cholesterol levels. The high flavonol content of Rooibos tea supports the cardiovascular system because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and has a positive effect on blood fats.

| Perhaps the best way to enjoy National Tea Day is to sit back and unwind with a fresh cup of Rooibos. We’ve perfected the process of brewing Rooibos tea so that you can make the best cup of tea at home.

| Simply follow these steps:
- Warm the teapot by rinsing it with boiling water.
- Place one bag of Rooibos or one heaped teaspoon of Rooibos per cup in the teapot
- Pour boiling water into the pot and keep it warm. (You can also slowly brew it in a pot on the stove if you want a full-flavour tea.)
- Allow infusing for 2 – 3 minutes.
- Add milk and sugar or honey to taste. Try a refreshing cup of Rooibos with honey and lemon.

| Here are some handy tips to keep in mind when brewing Rooibos:
- If Rooibos is steeped for 5 – 10 minutes, its antioxidant activity increases significantly.
- Use boiling water with a neutral pH. Never use over-boiled water, as the oxygen in the water will be depleted. Proper infusion of the Rooibos won’t be possible.
- Rooibos can also be prepared in a microwave oven. For a single cup, place one bag of Rooibos in a cup of cold water and microwave at maximum power for two minutes. (Use a glass teapot and the quantities advised above for larger amounts.)
