Reduced thermoregulatory ability contributes to increased mortality in urban box turtles (Terrapene spp.) |
A team of researchers from Missouri Botanical Garden, Saint Louis University, Saint Louis Zoo, and WashU analyzed 10 years of temperature data from free-living box turtles to assess differences in the temperatures experienced by urban and rural turtles and the impacts of temperature on turtle mortality.
Their findings, published in Journal of Thermal Biology, show that Forest Park turtles are poor thermoregulators and suffer higher mortality because of exposure to cold during brumation. Interestingly, researchers found no evidence of an urban heat island effect at the soil surface within the park's forest fragments.
