Student Spotlight

NAIM JOHNSON '16
Loves about Brebeuf:
One of the best things about Brebeuf are the people. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. During all of my four years at Brebeuf I have been able to see how great people are here. I think it’s rare to find that in a lot of other schools and it shows how the vast majority of people at Brebeuf are so accepting. I think retreats are a good reflection of this because people get to know each other to become not just classmates, but genuine friends.
Favorite Class:
My favorite class at Brebeuf was my Honors Anatomy and Physiology class with Mrs. McCarter last year, because it was cool to learn about the human body and how it works. I’m really interested in biology too. The labs helped me learn a lot because of the hands-on approach.
Future Plans:
I would like to go to medical school and become a sports medicine doctor. I’m not sure yet what college I am going to attend, but I applied to schools mostly in the Midwest, and a couple of places outside of it such as in New Orleans and Maryland. I would like to study biology as an undergraduate. I will probably also keep up with at least one foreign language because I’m currently taking French and Spanish. Depending where I go, I might also play soccer.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:

Soccer
Black Student Union
Kenya Club
Intramural Basketball
Community service at the Boys and Girls Club
Club Soccer
Random Fact:
My grandparents on my mom’s side are from Panama and their parents are from Jamaica.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
I think Brebeuf is pretty rigorous. Teachers can give a lot of work but they make it as manageable as possible because they want to push students to do our best. Teachers want you to succeed. When you have people that care about you so much, them giving you a lot of work isn’t necessarily a bad thing - they are pushing you to do your best. For example, I’m in AP Spanish and we have a lot of work to do but it’s because our teacher wants us to do well on the AP exam.
Would you rather…
Would you rather be Batman or Superman?
I would rather be Batman because I think Batman is cooler than Superman and I like his lifestyle more.
Have a pet unicorn or pet dragon?
I would rather have a pet dragon because in How to Train Your Dragon it looks cooler to have a dragon.
Travel to see the US sights by RV or helicopter?
I would rather see the sights by RV because you could do more and stop more while the helicopter has to stay in the air.
Would you rather spend one year sailing around the world or living in the heart of London?
I would rather go sailing for a year because you could see more places and I would want to see more places than just one for a year. Plus, I could be exposed to a lot more cultures.
Would you rather have your own action-figure/doll or a popular YouTube video?
I would rather have an action-figure because growing up everyone plays with action-figures and has a dream of having one. It would be cool to have your own.

Final Week for the #BrebeufFoodDrive

There is only ONE week left for the Brebeuf Food Drive. St. Vincent DePaul will send their trucks to pick up donations the morning of Holy Thursday, March 24. This is the last week to bring in  donations. Brebeuf had a good showing this past week, but we still are only halfway to our desired goal of filling two trucks.

The need is great. One in seven households in Indiana are food insecure as Indiana has taken longer than the rest of the U.S. to recover from the recession. One in five children in Indiana are living in poverty. As the largest food bank in the Midwest, St. Vincent DePaul is working to feed these families. Over the next year they will provide food for over 200,000 of our city’s working poor. Please consider bringing in a donation before next Thursday.

Heading into the final week, the homeroom leaders are Beck, Spotts, and, Moore. Homeroom classes with the most donations at the conclusion of the drive will receive a pizza party. It’s still a close race, so keep the donations coming and support St. Vincent DePaul.

Remember: Here is How to Help

To contribute to the drive, send any canned food items to Brebeuf Jesuit with a Brebeuf student, who will deliver the items to their homeroom collection. To contribute monetarily (Make checks out to: St. Vincent de Paul, memo: Food Pantry), bring donations of support to the front lobby desk at Brebeuf Jesuit.

By coming together during this food drive, the entire Brebeuf Jesuit community can make an incredible difference in the lives of thousands in need here in Indianapolis. Let’s bring in those cans to your student’s homeroom and support St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry.
