A Message from the Consul General
| |
| Ken Okaniwa
Consul General of Japan in Miami
|
| On August 29, North Korea launched a ballistic missile that flew over Japan and fell into the Pacific Ocean to the east of Hokkaido. This is an outrageous act that poses an unprecedented, grave and serious threat, and significantly undermines the peace and security of the region. Japan is working closely with US and other countries to change North Korea’s policies by increasing the pressure on North Korea. For the Chief Cabinet Secretary’s statement see http://japan.kantei.go.jp/97_abe/decisions/2017/1224195_11594.html
In the discussion following the missile launch between Prime Minister Abe and President Trump as well as between Foreign Minister Kono and Secretary of State Tillerson, the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister also expressed their heartfelt condolences regarding Hurricane Harvey and offered to provide assistance to the US. My thoughts are also with those affected by the terrible disaster.
Meanwhile, in early August, I visited Wakayama Prefecture, which has a sister State relations with Florida. In my meetings with Governor Yoshinobu Nisaka and others, we discussed various possibilities for future cooperation with Florida and Wakayama. This being my first visit to the prefecture, I was very impressed with its natural beauty, agricultural/fishery produce and hot springs. I will try my best to follow-up my visit.
On August 22, I accompanied Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart on a visit to Hitachi Rail production facility in Medley. The facility assembles trains for Miami-Dade County’s Metro Rail and contributes to local jobs. When the new trains start running, passengers will enjoy the comfortable and reliable trains.
October is the time of year to call for applications regarding the 2018 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. All those who are interested should keep an eye out for local information sessions organized by the Consulate taking place throughout Florida in September.
