On 16 January, the annual National Rooibos Day will once again be taking place. Rooibos Day traditionally takes place on the 16th of January - a date that coincides with the birthdate of Benjamin Ginsberg, who played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Rooibos industry. Beyond that, January marks the start of the Rooibos harvesting season.
Rooibos is one of South Africa’s greatest export products, but it is also enjoyed locally by South Africans across the country. In Clanwilliam in the Cederberg region, the only place in the world where Rooibos grows, businesses welcome those coming to celebrate Rooibos in its home town. There are a few shops, cafes and more offering specials and Rooibos-related goodies to visitors on Rooibos Day.
Rooibos Day can be celebrated in a number of ways. Below, we share some of our ideas with you!

As a result of level 3 lockdown regulations, it is understandable that many prefer to stay home while the country faces a second wave of COVID-19. Rooibos Day can luckily be celebrated from anywhere by making use of a few creative ideas!
One way in which you can celebrate Rooibos Day at home is by putting together your very own Rooibos pairing. Many chefs around the world have started using Rooibos to compliment their dishes because of its unique flavour.
| |
Some pairing ideas are set out below:
- Rooibos pairs well with white, nutty cheese or chocolate.
- It’s great to enjoy with other sweet flavours and desserts such as crème brûlée, panna cotta, éclairs or sorbets.
- Rooibos can also be used in soups and pasta sauces or when braaing.

When brewing Rooibos for a homemade pairing, it is recommended that the tea be steeped for at least 5 - 10 minutes to unlock its full flavour and nutrients.

Here is a recipe:
1. Pour 100ml of freshly boiled water over one Rooibos tea bag.
2. Leave to brew for 10 minutes (or a little longer for a richer flavour).
3. Once brewed, remove the bag and pour the Rooibos tea into a blender.
4. Add 3-4 scoops of good quality vanilla ice-cream and blend.
5. If it’s a little thick, add a splash of milk.
6. Pour into a glass and top with fruit, chocolate, sprinkles, cream, nuts… anything you like!

Rooibos is not only a healthy, delicious drink. It can also be used for a myriad of other purposes.
Rooibos can also be used to dye fabrics! The strength of the brew and the time the fabric is soaked will affect the depth of the colour - a lovely rich, reddish brown. For the best results, it is recommended to use bare wool with Rooibos dye. But, other fabrics like towels or yarn work just as well.
By using about 8 Rooibos tea bags and 8 cups of boiled water, you can easily create the mixture required to dye fabrics. The entire process takes a little over a day, seeing as your desired fabrics need to be soaked in water overnight to relax their fibres. The actual dyeing process takes a little over 1.5 hours.
