Key Guidance for Principal Investigators |
-
Forward All Communications from Federal Agencies: Immediately forward any communication from a federal agency pertaining to a sponsored award to the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) at osr@gwu.edu. OSP will provide guidance and communicate with the requesting agency.
-
Forward Requests for Payment or Drawdown Justifications: Promptly forward any request for expense details to Grants and Contracts Accounting Services (GCAS) at GCASinvoice@gwu.edu. Individuals should not provide expense details directly to the requesting agency. GCAS will review requests for financial reporting and follow up with sponsors for additional guidance.
-
Continue Using GW’s Federally-Negotiated Indirect Cost Rates: GW investigators should continue to utilize the university’s federally-negotiated indirect cost rates as they build and submit proposals. Any request by a sponsor to apply a rate different than GW’s federally-negotiated rate will require review and approval by a GW authorized representative.

NSF Pauses Implementation of Reduced Indirect Cost Rate |
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has entered into a consent agreement to pause the implementation of its reduced 15% indirect cost rate through June 13, 2025, when a hearing is scheduled to occur in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. During this pause, any new NSF awards or subawards will not apply the reduced rate. However, these awards will include a provision to apply the 15% rate for the full duration of the award if a court ultimately permits the policy to go into effect.

New GW Webpage Spotlights the Impact of Federally Funded Research |
The university has launched a Research Impact webpage that highlights how GW-led projects are advancing life-saving treatments, fueling economic growth, preparing the next generation of leaders and deepening our understanding of the world. The page will be expanded and updated with additional content over the coming months. The initiative aligns with similar efforts at peer institutions in response to the rapidly evolving federal funding landscape. Please consider sharing the page with your professional networks. Rapid Response Bridge Funding Program |
A group of private foundations are offering a rapid response bridge grant opportunity for scholars and teams whose education-related grants have recently been terminated by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The $25,000 grants are for activities to address immediate needs following grant cancellations, including completing a wave of data collection, analyzing already collected data or writing, thoughtful project closure with community partners, or preparing grant proposals to continue the research. Applications are due by Friday, May 30, 2025 or Friday, June 13, 2025.

NSF Major Research Instrumentation Program |
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program supports the acquisition or development of a multi-user research instrument that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs. GW may submit up to four proposals across three tracks with budgets ranging from $100,000 to $4 million. OVPR will administer a competitive review to determine which GW proposals will be developed and submitted to NSF. Interested PIs must submit required documents to OVPR via InfoReady by 1:00 pm on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. Full submissions to NSF will be due by 5:00 pm on Friday, November 14, 2025.
