June Update – Trustee Sara

Friends, I’m writing to share updates on the TDSB Budget process and meetings I’ll be holding next week (week of June 5) on the budget.

The TDSB is being forced to make cuts as the province is not funding the board for the costs of last year’s operations. Every school in our area will be affected and some are projected to lose significantly. You can find ongoing information here: Developing the 2023-2024 Budget (tdsb.on.ca).

Joint Virtual Budget Forum

This virtual forum is hosted by both Ward 15 Trustee Sara Ehrhardt and Ward 16 Beaches-East York Trustee Michelle Aarts.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions, offer views, and share ideas around organizing in the east end for public education.

In-person Drop-in Q&A with Trustee Sara Ehrhardt

7-8 pm at Wilkinson Junior Public School Library, 53 Donlands Ave
This is an opportunity for drop-in and informal discussion. Our Ward 15 PIAC representative and East End Parents 4 Public Education Organizer Jennifer Volk will also be on-hand to discuss organizing for public education.
Children are welcome to be part of the drop-in.
This is an indoor public event. Masks are strongly recommended (but optional).

I want to send everyone a huge thank you for all advocacy to the province around TDSB funding. It is making a difference! While the budget meetings are very (very) grim, it is our community that is giving me hope to persevere.

Take Action!

Thanks so much to everyone who has started spreading the word and taking action to support public education. We need to keep at it! Here’s what more we can do:

Call the Premier – call anytime 416-325-1941. Give them a call, share your concerns about what further cuts mean for your school, and ask them to put more money into our school board. You can ask them to take note for the Premier. This makes a difference!
Write to provincial Ministers – Here is a sample email to provincial ministers to start from.
Sign and share this online petition Petition · Restore Funding to Education in Ontario · Change.org.

A big thank you to everyone who signed the petition for the Ontario Legislature and to our MPP Peter Tabuns. I understand these will be tabled in the legislature this week!

Budget Process: TDSB budget consultations are taking place in June – time is very tight as the province was late to announce their education funding this year and the Board is required by the province to pass a balanced budget before July 1. June 1 – Special finance committee to present options to balance the TDSB budget

Saturday June 3 at noontime join the Enough is Enough Rally and March – more information here: https://ofl.ca/eie-june-3/ . This marks the one-year anniversary of Doug Ford’s re-election and, it’s been a rough one. Affordability is rock bottom, and from wages to housing, education, and health care we have been finding ourselves constantly at odds with the provincial government’s whims. Ontarians deserve better; this is an opportunity for all of us to come together and remind Doug Ford who he is beholden to: the working people, not developers or corporations!

Kâpapâmahchakwêw Powwow is taking place on Thursday, June 15. Kâpapâmahchakwêw - Wandering Spirit School is a K-12 School providing Indigenous focused education, located at 16 Phin Ave. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend.
