New Healing Hands Explores Non-Opioid Substance Use, Mental Health, & Homelessness
The Council’s latest Healing Hands examines non-opioid substance use disorders among people experiencing homelessness. While the opioid crisis has received considerable attention in the health care community and media in recent years, substance use disorders go well beyond opioids, including additional drugs such as methamphetamines, cocaine, alcohol, and K2. Our new publication—by and for homeless health care clinicians—explores these substances, as well as critical issues that intersect with substance use and mental health in homeless populations and providers’ strategies to reduce the impact of stigma on patient treatment. Read the full issue or view our Healing Hands archive.
Policy Brief Examines Medication-Assisted Treatment in Health Care for the Homeless
Our new publication with the Kaiser Family Foundation outlines strategies for how Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) programs can start or expand medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services to address the opioid epidemic. While HCH programs serve only four percent of all health center patients nationally, they are responsible for serving nearly 40 percent of all patients receiving MAT. Learn how to overcome the common challenges that HCH programs face in growing MAT programs in primary care environments in our policy brief, and don’t miss our accompanying webinar at 2-3 p.m. ET on May 1.

Complementing our recently published policy brief, this free session will feature staff from two very different HCH programs (urban and rural) who will discuss how they developed their programs and provide advice for others looking to do more with MAT. Join the conversation and learn more about how we can effectively fight the opioid epidemic by increasing access to treatment.
Upcoming Webinar with CDC Explores Hep A Vaccinations for Homeless Populations
Join the Council and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for a free webinar from 2-3 p.m. CT on May 7 to learn about hepatitis A vaccinations for people without homes. People experiencing homelessness across the U.S. have coped with debilitating hepatitis A outbreaks due to a lack of safe and clean housing and facilities. To help address this crisis, our webinar will examine the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendation that all people without homes who are at least one year old receive routine immunizations against hepatitis A—and how this measure can help protect vulnerable populations. Register now.
