August 19, 2024
Dear Parents,
The first week of school is approaching! Although most teachers have already been in our classrooms setting up, today marks the official beginning of the new school year for staff.
We are greatly looking forward to seeing you and welcoming your children (in free dress) to their classrooms on Monday, August 26, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. All students and parents are invited to visit classrooms and meet teachers.
Please enjoy hospitality before or after your visit to the classroom on the Church patio (or Hess if the weather is inclement) hosted by our 8th Grade parents on behalf of the Home & School Association. Refreshments should be consumed outside (or in Hess) only.
Gently used uniform items will be conveniently available at the Whitehaven entrance; please help yourself to any items for your child(ren).
After our meet-and-greet, our team will gather with all those who work in schools across the Archdiocese of Washington for the Opening of Schools Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated by His Eminence, Cardinal Wilton Gregory. Our own Gretchen Hochhausler will be honored during this liturgy for twenty-five years of service in Catholic education. This Mass is always an inspiring experience; please join us in prayer for another faith-filled and successful school year.
We understand that parents appreciate having as much information as possible in advance; please expect to receive communication next week from your child(ren)’s teacher(s) regarding the specific class information.
Our first weekly newsletter, sent on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, is an important resource for staying updated on all school activities and events. We encourage you to check it regularly for additional and ongoing information.
Please find a link here to an article recommended by Kristin Short, our school counselor. The article suggests tips for preparing your child(ren) and family for the new school year. If you have concerns regarding your child's social-emotional health, please reach out to Mrs. Short directly at counselor@olvschooldc.org.

Our high school group will accept donations of various school supplies for Mary House, such as new backpacks, pencil cases, plastic pencil boxes, stickers, #2 pencils, new crayons, and markers of all sizes. Let's come together to spread joy and support as the new school year begins!
