The gavel is not the only thing that came down on the last day of the 85th Texas Legislature. A hammer also came down on Texas PTA’s hopes for at long last beginning the work of improving the funding system for public schools in Texas. Despite the calls and emails by Texas PTA members to legislators, the Texas Senate and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick in the end were more dedicated to private school choice than to real school funding reform.
“Once again,” said Lisa Holbrook, Texas PTA President, “Texas legislators will go home and the lights will go out in the Texas Capitol without accomplishing the most important goal of the session for Texas students.”
In keeping with the state’s new school accountability system, Texas PTA awards the Texas Senate and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick the grade of:
F for Failure to Reform School Finance
F for failure to Increase the State’s Share of Cost of School Funding
F for Prioritizing Private School Choice Over School Funding Reform
F for choosing politics over students
“While we are disappointed not more was done for public education,” said Texas PTA President Lisa Holbrook, “we appreciate the efforts of House Speaker Joe Straus and House Public Education Chairman Dan Huberty and members of the committee to address sorely needed reforms.”
Texas PTA will continue to work with legislators to effect needed change to our outdated, underfunded, and unequal system of funding for schools. We will continue to be the voice for all children. Texas PTA encourages our members, parents, grandparents, guardians, concerned citizens and business leaders to back the future.
