Message from the Chairs
We are so glad to share this first issue of the Branching Out, Building Together: A Capital Campaign for Hebrew College quarterly e-newsletter, where we will be providing news and updates about our campaign to build a new shared campus and vibrant hub for Jewish life, learning, and leadership in Newton.
Under the excellent and tireless leadership of Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld and Board Chair Andy Offit—who have been working with dedicated board members, community leaders, donors, alumni, staff, and students to develop a strategic vision for Hebrew College’s next chapter—we are so excited to be co-chairing the Capital Campaign that will make the vision for a new campus collaborative into a reality.
Imagine with us! It’s winter 2022. Hebrew College’s new home is on a shared campus with Temple Reyim, Mayyim Hayyim, the Jewish Arts Collaborative, the Jewish Women's Archive, Keshet, and several other wonderful, mission-aligned organizations. Together with our campus partners, Hebrew College is continuing its sacred work as a center for Jewish learning and leadership and creating a dynamic collaborative that will be a national model for Jewish communal sustainability, creativity, leadership development, and innovation.
In this newsletter, you will meet one of our campus partners, read donor stories, and view a list of those who have already joined our campaign. We hope you will add your name to the list, if you haven't already, to help us reach our campaign goal—after which we will unlock a generous challenge grant for the last much-needed $1 million from a major philanthropic foundation.
Please enjoy this inaugural issue and join us to "branch out and build together," as President Anisfeld says, "to carry forward the College’s enduring commitment to Jewish literacy, creativity, and community, to plant the seeds for a future that is even more full of possibility than we can imagine—because we will create it together!"

Branching Out: Mayyim Hayyim's Carrie Bornstein
"The idea of having Hebrew College located here breaks open so much potential for how to infuse each other’s work. There are a lot of synergies between our organizations, being institutions of learning and education, and being pluralistic organizations that seek to bring together a diversity of different kinds of Jews.
"Having the two organizations side-by-side helps rabbis and cantors consider how the mikveh can be infused in their work and how it can help nourish them personally. We've had a number of volunteer Mikveh Guides who are involved in Hebrew College some way. We’ve hosted Hebrew College Open Circle Jewish Learning courses in the past. We recently hired rabbinical student and intern Amalia Mark as our new Director of Programs and Partnerships. And we’re also creating a clergy-student mikveh fellowship and we’re going to be piloting that with Hebrew College with the hopes of expanding it out from there to other rabbinical schools."
— Carrie Bornstein, Mayyim Hayyim Chief Executive Officer

Building Together: Susan & Bob Schechter
"My husband Bob and I became interested in the Hebrew College Capital Campaign because of Rabbi Sharon’s vision and dream—and her courage. We wanted to support Sharon and ensure there would be a vibrant Hebrew College for generations to come. I never dreamed that the collaboration could extend in the way it has. It’s bringing together a community of like-minded thinkers—organizations and partners who are all out-of-the-box thinkers. With this new shared campus, Hebrew College will be a role model for the rest of the Jewish community here in Greater Boston, across the United States, and internationally. At a time when some institutions are weakening, this vision and move is testament to Hebrew College's strength of vision and to what strong leadership can achieve."
— Susan Schechter, Capital Campaign Co-Chair
