May is Mental Health Month - Trevor Project survey results

One-on-one parent and caregiver coaching and consultation

When a young person comes out, parents and caregivers may have questions about effective ways to support them. Our coaching sessions are open to all parents, caregivers, and family members who are seeking to support queer and trans youth in their lives. Sessions are one-hour meetings with a RECLAIM staff member and can be scheduled either in-person or online.

The fee for this service is $75.

Professional training and consultation

RECLAIM is reviving our training and consultation offerings! RECLAIM offers both training and on-going consultation to organizations that are interested in improving their ability to work effectively around experiences of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Trainings are provided on the following topics:

Gender and Sexuality (SOGIE) 101
Allyship and Creating Inclusive Spaces
Generalist practice of providing Gender Affirming Mental Health Care
Specialized training on clinical care for queer and trans youth (specific to care setting)
Supporting parents/caregivers of queer and trans youth

Fees range from $250 - $500 per hour depending on the number of attendees and training type.

Consultation:

Provider consultation – monthly sessions for cohorts of 6-8 providers. Participation requires a 6-month commitment and costs $600 for the series. Flexible payment terms are available.
Organization consultation – organizations contract with RECLAIM for 6 months and select the providers (maximum of 8) who attend. Contracts include a fee of $1500 to cover 6 monthly sessions.
Program consultation – organizations contract for support to ensure policies and practices are queer/trans affirming. Fees are project specific.

Consultations address the clinical needs and specific interventions for queer/trans youth and young adults being served by a provider or organization and are grounded in a person-centered, intersectional identity development and trauma-based approach to clinical care.

RECLAIM is hiring for a Full-time Mental Health Therapist

Note: this position description has been changed; we are accepting applicants who are not independently licensed.

Salary Range: $55,000-$58,000 (under supervision); $64,000-$67,000 (independently licensed)
37.5 hour work week, generous PTO, benefits eligible.

We are seeking a full-time Mental Health Therapist who is passionate about the mission and values of RECLAIM. We are building a community of emerging and experienced practitioners who apply postmodern principles to their practice. We specialize in supporting youth around sexual orientation and gender identity in addition to treating other mental health concerns impacting youth and young adults. RECLAIM is committed to recruiting candidates with lived experience in communities of color and/or Trans communities.

Job Summary: Provide individual, couples, family, and group therapy services utilizing a structured therapy approach consistent with a managed care environment. Maintain appropriate and timely treatment and documentation. Respond to requirements of managed care, payer, grant, and donor sources for quality assurance and customer satisfaction.

We are celebrating 10 years of connecting LGBTQ+ folks through storytelling and community-building gatherings!

This June, we'll gather to celebrate and affirm our legacy, honoring the over 100 storytellers we have featured and building the resources for another 100. Please join us and invite your friends and networks! Everyone has history and a future. Your story is part of Telling Queer History.

At this fabulous party, we will have live storytelling, a legacy ideation station, intergenerational story pods, delicious food, an online auction, a surprise reveal, and a dance party. We are so excited to celebrate with you

We will be live-streaming the event for our supporters and friends who can't join this gathering in-person. ASL interpreted, substance free event, family friendly (intergenerational) with childcare provided. Kids under 12 attend for free.

TIGERRS (Trans Intersex Gender-Expansive Revolutionary Resources & Services) and a parent ally are co-sponsoring a 2.5 to 3 hour Empowerment and Self-Defense Workshop that's geared primarily for young people in the LGBTQIA2S+ community, although siblings and parents are more than welcome to participate. Held at the Burnsville Martial Arts Academy

Legislative update

On Thursday, April 27, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed two bills into law advancing the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ Minnesotans and those coming to Minnesota to seek gender affirming care:

Banning conversion "therapy"
Trans refuge bill, protecting people seeking or providing gender-affirming health care (cementing into law Executive Order 23-03)

As Gov. Walz said, "Freedom is on the march in Minnesota. Decency is on the march in Minnesota. Compassion is on the march in Minnesota. Hate and bigotry too are on the march. But we make very clear that march of bigotry and hate stops at Minnesota's borders." We applaud our political leaders who have stood strong to protect and support our queer and trans community.

May is Mental Health Month

Read the Trevor Project's annual survey results

Our work to increase mental health care for queer and trans youth is easier with good information and data. The Trevor Project just released the results of their 2023 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People. From the introduction:

The Trevor Project’s 2023 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People amplifies the experiences of more than 28,000 LGBTQ young people ages 13 to 24 across the United States. This survey gives a voice to LGBTQ young people — at a time when their existence is unfairly at the center of national political debates and state legislatures have introduced and implemented a record number of anti-LGBTQ policies.

For the fifth consecutive year, these data underscore that anti-LGBTQ victimization contributes to the higher rates of suicide risk reported by LGBTQ young people and that most who want mental health care are unable to get it.

Importantly, this research also points to ways we can all support the LGBTQ young people in our lives by highlighting protective factors like creating affirming spaces and respecting pronouns, as well as the topics about which LGBTQ young people wish those in their lives knew more.
