Proposed Ball Fields at Bradford Intermediate

Many residents have inquired about the potential development of ball fields on the land adjacent to Bradford Intermediate. The Jefferson County School District is in the preliminary stages of evaluating the site. The Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District is making every effort to participate in the conversation so it may represent the best interests of the community. As far as the Metro District knows, the proposed field development would be multiuse ball fields to meet the needs of Bradford’s expansion to a K-8 school. To our knowledge, there are no plans for lights or other structures at this time. As more detailed information becomes available, we will report it back to the community through the e-News, website, Facebook and in the Life at Ken-Caryl newspaper. The Metro District Board will be discussing the ball fields at their Oct. 25 meeting at 6 p.m. at the Ranch House. The meeting is open to the public. Questions can be directed to District Manager Darrell Windes at 303-979-1876, ext. 114, or darrellw@kcranch.org.

MD Board Discussing Conversion of Community Center Tennis Courts 1 & 2 to Pickleball Courts

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, and it can be played at almost any age. Many of Ken-Caryl Ranch’s older residents have asked for more programming suitable for their age group, and pickleball could help satisfy that request. Currently tennis courts 1 & 2 at the Community Center are in a state of disrepair and are closed because they are not safe to use. The Metro District Board plans on replacing courts 1 & 2 with new post-tension courts in the future, but funding is not available at this time. The Board has discussed a short-term repair and temporary conversion of these courts to pickleball courts in order to test this type of programming for the community. The repairs and painting would be funded through the 2017 maintenance budget. These less expensive, temporary improvements will allow the Metro District to test the popularity of pickleball and determine if a permanent court should be created in the future. If pickleball is not popular during the trial period, then no large investment has been made, and the courts can be converted back to tennis. Some residents have expressed concern that there are not enough tennis courts for league play at the Community Center. The Metro District Board discussed that tennis leagues would be allowed to use two indoor courts (at no additional cost) to accommodate the capacity needs for the league. The courts will be discussed at the Tuesday, Oct. 25 Metro District Board meeting at 6 p.m. at the Ranch House. If you have any questions or comments, contact Melissa Daruna at melissad@kcranch.org.

Feedback Needed on Massey Draw Canyon Trail

The Open Space Committee, Staff and Volunteer Trail Coordinators have created a Draft Plan to rehabilitate and restore the Massey Draw Canyon Trail. The goals of the plan are to increase the sustainability of the trail, better protect open space resources, reduce erosion, and increase user safety, while keeping the rugged character of the trail as a hiker-only trail. The work will include rock steps, drainage improvements and tread work to better define the trail. Many residents use this trail and are familiar with the large rock formations that the trail ascends about halfway up. The Open Space Committee would like input from residents on travel across these rocks. Should fixed anchors such as handholds, steps, cables or ladders be installed to aid travel across these rocks? Would you prefer to see the rock scramble section left unchanged? Please send your comments no later than Friday, Nov. 11 to Sean Warren at seanw@kcranch.org.
