A walk around the neighborhood in winter is still a treat for bird watchers. Year-round residents (i.e. chickadees, Canada geese, finches, jays, robins, spotted towhees) are joined by cedar waxwings, juncos, and bushtits. Many of these birds have spent the summer at higher elevations and will overwinter here or continue on to lower elevations. Those who remain have adaptations to survive the cold. Typically, birds will feed constantly during the day on dried berries, cached insects etc. They may look a little chunkier than they do in summer. This is due to food intake and their feathers being “fluffed” to preserve heat. Birds have many different types of feathers. A base layer of downy feathers provide insulation by retaining body heat. These specialized feathers are much more efficient than mammal hair. During the night, many birds huddle together and shiver to generate heat. Many will find shelter in bird boxes, tree cavities and deep in evergreen branches. They also reduce their metabolism which saves energy. This is termed torpor and during this period breathing and heart rate are barely perceptible.
Short sample check list of winter birds:
|
-
Chickadees (constantly on the move during the day)
- Bushtits (a ball of feathers)
- Cedar waxwings (often with robins; always in flocks; noisy; too many ripe berries can make them tipsy)
- Juncos (easily identified by white outer tail feathers)
- Spotted towhees (usually sitting up high on bushes)
-
Very common Red-tailed hawk, Bald Eagle and a few resident Kestrels (a small falcon)
- Jays—Pinyon, Scrub, Magpies (raucous noise makers)
- Flickers (the only woodpecker that forages on the ground); Downy and Hairy woodpeckers
- White breasted nuthatch (hitch their way up and down trees foraging for insects)
-
Grosbeaks (noisy flocks usually just passing through)
- Dipper (always by water; you have to love the “dipper dance”); Herons might remain locally
- Interesting terms to Google: Torpor, Retia mirabilia (“wonderful net” of blood vessels)

When is the last time that you went outside at night just to look at the stars?
The night sky is a global treasure, shared by all of us across civilizations and throughout time. Yet today a majority of people live in cities, where increasing light pollution compromises their view of the stars. We should count our lucky stars that we live in an area with a beautiful dark night sky. Stargazing promotes a sense of calm and purpose. By looking up at night and contemplating the remote universe, we realize that our shared cosmic home is irreplaceable, and it urges us to become better stewards of our world. So go outside tonight, look up, and be inspired.

Following the Board’s unanimous approval of the budget at the November Board Meeting, homeowners had the next step of voting on the budget. According to our governing documents, two-thirds of RVR’s property owners would have to vote no to reject the budget to curtail it from going into effect on 1/1/2024. Of the 157 homeowners who voted on the budget ratification, 127 were in favor of the budget, while 30 opposed it. That means the budget goes into effect on January 1, 2024.
Thanks to all of you who took the time to weigh in on the issue.

Did you know that dog waste is an environmental hazard? According to the EPA, pet waste doesn't just decompose, it adds harmful bacteria to local waters when it is not disposed of properly. Animal waste can be a source of pollution that can create problems for water quality, and even human health.
Read more at epa.org.
Poop bags are provided in RVR year round at the regularly serviced waste stations. Please be a good neighbor and dog owner, and scoop the poop!

During the busy holiday season practice good postal etiquette!
|
|
|
|
-
Be sure to check your mailbox regularly. There is limited space in each box and with the holidays, many residents will be receiving catalogs, packages and other bulk mail. If your box is full, the post office may have to return your mail to the sender.
-
Remember that if you are heading out of town, you should put your mail delivery on hold. You can do so on the USPS website by clicking here.
-
Members can also sign up for informed delivery by USPS. This allows you to see photos of your mail prior to its arrival for free! Click here for more information.
|
Be considerate of the postal workers. They are working extra hard this time of year!
