Bringing St. John's Law to the World . . . In July, our Center for Law and Religion and frequent partner LUMSA University co-hosted an academic conference on Liberalism’s Limits: Religious Exemptions and Hate Speech. Organized by the Center's co-directors, Professors Marc DeGirolami and Mark Movsesian, and LUMSA Professor Monica Lugato, the one-day event took place on LUMSA's campus in Rome, Italy and drew scholars from the United States and Europe. Read all about it.
. . . And Into Our Community Hats off to Oliver Colbert and the rest of our J.D. Admissions team for coordinating Assembling a Dream Team for the Court . . . Room: An Introduction to Sports Law for High School Students. Presented in partnership with the Long Island Nets and the New York Liberty organizations, this two-week summer program gives local high school students an unrivaled opportunity to explore their interests at the intersection of sports law and civil rights. It's just one of the initiatives the Law School oversees to develop a pipeline to law school for historically minoritized and underrepresented groups.

| Real-World Scholarship Among many notable activities and achievements this past academic year, Professor Gina Calabrese was instrumental in advocating for the passage of New York's Consumer Credit Families Act, which changed state court procedures in consumer credit actions, safeguarding the legal rights of consumers sued for debt–nearly all of whom do not have attorneys. She's now consulting on a similar initiative being proposed on a national scale by the Uniform Law Commission.
Professor Elayne Greenberg presented Blinding Justice and Video Conferencing? as part of a panel on Pandemic Impacts on Remote Justice at the International Association for Conflict Management's Annual Program. Her fuller discussion on this evolving issue will appear in a forthcoming issue of the Stetson Law Review.
The praise continues for Professor Rosemary Salomone's latest book, The Rise of English: Global Politics and the Power of Language (Oxford University Press). You can listen in as she talks about her research and writing with The New Books Network, a consortium of author-interview podcast channels covering 100+ subjects, disciplines, and genres reaching a million people globally each month.
Professor Ray Warner presented his paper, "Collectivity – Converging EU and US Approaches," at the INSOL London Academics Colloquium. The paper explores the challenge presented by increasingly popular bankruptcy restructuring plans that restructure only one class of claims—usually publicly traded bond debt—while leaving all other creditors unaffected. Those plans, Professor Warner asserts, don't fit the traditional view that insolvency proceedings must be collective and involve all creditors.
In the Media In this Newsweek opinion piece, Professor John Q. Barrett looks at the Justice Department's criminal investigation of Donald Trump and others who worked to subvert the 2020 election, writing: "What DOJ is doing, and what it will continue to do, is appropriately aggressive, fact-based investigative work. Investigating Trump and then deciding whether he should be prosecuted could continue into 2023. So be it. It is the right, ordinary way of federal criminal investigations."
Over at the Wall Street Journal, Professor Michael Perino offers a historical take on House Oversight and Reform Committee subpoena avoidance, drawing from his book: The Hellhound of Wall Street: How Ferdinand Pecora's Investigation of the Great Crash Forever Changed American Finance.

Love this LinkedIn post, and love seeing Apple summer intern Camille Castle '24 in the group shot. Back in November, as she was settling into her first semester of law school, we featured Camille in our Humans of St. John's Law story series.
Victoria Giorgio '23 has earned the inaugural Hon. Dorothy T. Eisenberg Women in the Law "Trailblazer" Award. Established by the Long Island Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association in honor and memory of Judge Eisenberg—who served in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York for 25 years—the award recognizes a rising second-or third-year law student who demonstrates the same personal characteristics representative of Judge Eisenberg, such as unwavering determination, civility, and commitment to continuing to pave the way for future generations of women professionals. Congratulations, Victoria!
