New Commentary Examines Internet Disparity Among ELs

In Internet Disparity Challenges: Schooling for All, CAL researcher, Dr. Beatriz Arias, examines the challenges of online learning for Els without access to the Internet. In the paper, she cautions that "if we do not address the issue of Internet disparity, we will be denying educational opportunities to ELs."

In May, Dr. Gene Garcia, chair of the CAL Board of Trustees, presented proclamations of appreciation to 5 past Board of Trustees members for their leadership and commitment to CAL's mission.
In her interview, Dr. Kathy Escamilla states that one of the big ways that educating English learners has advanced over the past sixty years is that we now see [mother tongue education] as a linguistic and a cognitive asset.  She further adds that  what educators need to do now is to reduce the psychological and emotional barriers that still face English learners when they come to school speaking non-English language.
Mrs. Roberta Miceli represents CAL on the working group, led by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The group is charged with providing support for states, districts and schools as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
