Let’s Give a Warm Welcome! Please join us in welcoming Vernadette Horne as the Law School's Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Dean Horne joins us from Hofstra Law School, where she was the Senior Director of Career Services and Diversity Initiatives. She has also worked at Brooklyn Law School and practiced as a litigator, with a focus on asbestos matters. Prior to earning her J.D. at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, Dean Horne worked as an information consultant and project manager.
Commencement 2021 Goes Live (and Virtual) This Sunday, we'll celebrate Commencement 2021 as our J.D. and LL.M. graduates become the newest members of the St. John's Law alumni family during three in-person ceremonies at Carnesecca Arena and one virtual ceremony. All four events will be livestreamed and you can watch them here.
In Memoriam Our beloved alumna, colleague, and friend Erica B. Fine '82 has passed away. This story shares some of the many ways she touched our lives and hearts. May her memory be a blessing.
The St. John's Law community mourns the loss of Professor Robert E. Parella '11HON, an esteemed colleague and teacher, who passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. You can read our remembrance here. May he rest in peace.

Professor Adrián E. Alvarez focuses his scholarship on disability and its intersection with immigration and family law, especially with regard to unaccompanied immigrant children. One of his latest articles on the subject, "Enabling the Best Interests Factors," appears in the Arizona State Law Journal Online.
Professor Catherine Baylin Duryea successfully defended her dissertation, “Practicing Human Rights in the Arab World: International Law in 20th Century Advocacy,” fulfilling the requirements for her Ph.D. from Stanford University. An article based on two chapters of her dissertation is forthcoming in the Berkeley Journal of International Law. Professor Duryea’s ongoing research into the Emergency Court of Appeals, a specialized WW2-era price court, was featured on a recent episode of the Tech Refactored podcast.
The Verge has a great interview with Professor Kate Klonick, in which she offers her take on the Facebook Oversight Board's decision upholding Donald Trump's ban from the popular social media platform.
Professor Rosemary C. Salomone moderated a recent panel discussion on education as part of the Language and Migration: Experience and Memory symposium hosted by Princeton University with the Study Group on Language and the United Nations. She also was a guest speaker for an international seminar series on Language Policy and Practices in the Global North and South. Author(ity) Big congrats go out to Sean Boren '22, whose paper, "Going for Gold and Protecting It Too: Intellectual Property and the Olympic Games," was selected for publication in the New York State Bar Association Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law (EASL) Section's EASL Journal as a Law Student Initiative winner.
And hats off to Ron Eniclerico '21, whose paper, "Crises and Compulsory Licenses: Crafting a More Equitable Work-for-Hire Regime for Comic Book Creators," earned him runner-up honors in this year's New York Intellectual Property Law Association Honorable William C. Conner Writing Competition.
