Our staff at the Myaamia Center have been busy preparing for the 10th biennial Myaamiaki Conference! At this year's conference, we will highlight a wide range of projects and research that are underway here in the Myaamia Center to support the revitalization of Myaamia language and culture.

We hope you will join us, in person or online, for this year's conference. The conference is free and open to the public, but we ask that you register if you plan to attend.

Our language team joined forces with Megan Sekulich, the Myaamia Center graphic design specialist, to produce Valentine’s Day cards featuring Myaamia language. Next year, you can say Wiiyaakiteeheelo tapaalintioni kiišikahki ‘Celebrating a Day of Love’! This is a great example of how languages change over time in order to remain useful to those who speak them. What other holiday would you like language for?

Myaamia Education Office Updates

The transition from mahkoonsa kiilhswa to aanteekwa kiilhswa usually marks the end of peepoonki ‘winter’ and a whole host of ecological changes. This year that transition also marked the closing of our maple sugar camp on Miami University’s campus. This year, we tapped ten ahsenaamiša ‘Sugar maple’ trees and collected well over 50 gallons of sap. It was a strange season temperature wise with a few periods of surprising warmth breaking up the required pattern of cold nights (below freezing) and warm days (above 40 degrees). We’re looking forward to sharing the iihkisaminki ‘maple syrup’ we made at the end of the semester pancake and waffle feast with our students!

Our Myaamia students have been enjoying Miami University’s spring break this week and we’re looking forward to their return to campus on Monday, April 1st. This semester, our students were virtually visited by two Myaamia artists in the Myaamia Heritage class. Scott Shoemaker, a community ribbonworker, spoke to the class in February. In March, Julie Olds, Cultural Resources Officer for the Miami Tribe, visited to talk about her evolution as a Myaamia artist and share her paintings and drawings. Both of these presentations will prepare students as they begin their final projects, designing Myaamia t-shirts. The class will later vote upon these designs to have one finalized and printed. Mihši neewe ‘a big thank you’ to Scott and Julie for sharing their knowledge with our class.
