Segways tours - NEW!

UBC Botanical Garden has partnered with Wild BC Tours and Guiding to bring segway tours to the Garden. If you’ve never tried a segway before, you are in for a treat. Gliding through the garden is next to effortless and a great way to experience more of our wonderful collections in a single visit.

Rain City Chronicles

The Great Outdoors, a storytelling event put on by the Rain City Chronicles, held on August 7th in the UBC Botanical Garden, was just such a night. But it was no ordinary evening–the garden, complete with a supermoon above, was made all the more special by the presence of gifted storytellers and musicians, pies and gin, belly laughter and hushed listening in the Roseline Sturdy Amphitheatre.

Aeriosa

This summer, in partnership with Greenheart Canopy Walkway, the Garden hosted the Aeriosa Dance Society for 7 performances in June and August. With over 500 tickets sold and 5 sold-out performances, our collaborative vision to combine unexpected experiences of dance with the natural environment of the Garden was realized. We also celebrated the performances with wine and cheese gatherings in the Meyer Glade while the sun set and the squirrels chattered. Special thanks are extended to Julia Taffe and all her dancers, Randi Thomas and all the amazing volunteers without whom this special event could not have happened.

Apple Festival

A family event for all ages, the UBC Apple Festival celebrates one of British Columbia's favourite fruits. From children learning about the diversity of apples to those who remember tasting heritage apples in their youth, the Apple Festival is a great opportunity to not only discover more about this delicious fruit, but have a whole lot of fun doing it!

Join the Friends of the Garden (FOGs)

Founded in 1976, the Friends of the Garden or ‘FOGs’, are members of a volunteer-based branch of the botanical garden. Comprised of 160 active members, FOGs assist in the planning and execution of events, operation of specific garden features such as the Shop in the Garden, and play a critical role in fundraising and generating new membership. Being a FOG is more than just volunteering, it’s a commitment to upholding the mission of the garden, and ensuring that the garden remains a sanctuary for the preservation of both native and global biodiversity not only in the present, but also into the future. FOGs receive a number of benefits for their contribution to the garden including discounts in our Shop in the Garden, weekly show and tell sessions and numerous tours and learning opportunities.

Are you interested in connecting with like-minded people and talking with people about the Garden and sustainability? We have a busy season of events and outreach opportunities coming up this Fall and we need your help! Volunteer outreach assistants play an important role by reaching out to the UBC and Vancouver community by raising awareness about the Garden programs and services. Vancouver-made cups and bowls in ‘Birch Pattern’ by local artist Sophia Clay Art will bring the outdoors inside to your table.

One of the most frequently asked questions at the Botanical Garden is "where are the flowers?" This is not a silly question, given that most public and large commercial gardens are designed with floral display as a primary objective. In many cases, it may not be obvious to the visitor what she/he is actually looking at in a botanical garden compared with a typical display garden. However, because the Botanical Garden is primarily a research and teaching collection, it is difficult to justify the high cost of extensive flower beds. Such a dilemma—more flowers equals more revenue, versus more science equals more value to research and teaching—is not uncommon with university botanical gardens.
