Welcome Grow Serve Celebrate

My youngest came home from camp this summer wanting to read the Bible. He said he was going to read a little every night and begin at the beginning. I tried to give him some pointers like maybe don’t just start at the beginning and try and read it straight through. I suggested picking out one book, starting with a gospel, maybe jumping around. I pulled out the study Bible he was given when he entered 3rd grade and showed how it could help him understand each book and that there were side notes that would help him with passages. I tried to prepare him for the weird, scary, ugly and hard to understand stuff in the Bible and told him to come ask me if he ever had a question. Did he take any of my advice? No, because what could I possibly know about reading the Bible?
But, his eagerness got me thinking about what I hoped he would find in scripture and about what I find in scripture. In a time when random verses are put on t-shirts, made into home décor, and/or memorized to be used as a go-to defense for particular ways of thinking or believing, I thought about the long history of scripture and the deep meaning continually passed on from one generation to the next. I thought about the wisdom of scripture, not just favorite verses but overarching themes that aid us in understanding God, ourselves, and our world.
This year in worship we will explore the wisdom of scripture. We begin this Sunday and we will begin at the beginning listening for the wisdom we find in our creation story. I hope to see you Sunday at 10:45 am. If you want to dive into scripture in preparation for Sunday, take a look at these passages: Genesis 1:1-31; 2:1-4, 9:9-17, Psalm 24:1-2, 104, and Job 38-39.

We are designating August as “name tag month.” We have had a lot of new faces and some new individuals to join our church family, and we want to aid everyone in getting to know each other. When you enter worship this Sunday, pick up a name tag and look for a new face to greet. Let us continue to live into our first core value to welcome one another.

| New Bibles
On Promotion Sunday, it is tradition at PHUMC for the Kindergarten and Third Grade Sunday School students to receive their own Bibles.
It is our prayer that these Bibles will be treasured by these students, and that they will study the scripture to learn to welcome, grow, serve, and celebrate!
When you see these youngsters, tell them how proud we are of them, and that we are all here to help them on their spiritual journey.

The Bridge
A new group of Bridgers kicked off on Promotion Sunday. The Bridge is PHUMC's 'tween ministry which prepares 5th and 6th graders during a two year period leading into Confirmation.
Sunday morning, the Bridgers were surprised with a new Sunday School room designed by Taylor Pruett, and put together by Pastor Dawn, Chere Peel, Maggie King, Shawn Flowers, Brad Norris, Pastor Haven, and Drew Pruett.
Sunday afternoon the Bridgers celebrated with a surprise pool party at the home of Frank Newell.
The Bridge Sunday School Class, taught by Drew Pruett and Linda Irby, will focus on Old Testament lessons one semester and then New Testament in the Spring. This pattern will repeat during the second year. The goal is to give the students a strong scriptural foundation and help them understand how to apply the lessons to their everyday lives, all in preparation for Confirmation classes taught by Pastor Dawn.

You can pay in person by cash or check, online, or on the Vanco app.

Join us after the Worship service on August 13 for a prayer walk through East Flora Elementary School. Following Worship, we will go to lunch, then head out to East Flora Elementary. This will be a time to walk through the halls and classrooms of East Flora, covering them in prayer along with writing teachers and students encouraging notes. If you are interested in attending the Prayer Walk contact Pastor Haven.
