Alternate grading policy details
To continue to recognize the extreme stress and difficulty that students are experiencing throughout the pandemic, Ohio University has approved the Alternate Grading Policy for undergraduate courses. This means that for most courses, after grades are finalized and available in MyOHIO Student Center, students will be able to request an “S” or “Satisfactory” in place of their earned grade. (D+, D, D- grades will automatically convert to “S” or “Satisfactory” unless the course is exempted.) With an "S" or "Satisfactory" grade the course can still be used to meet a graduation requirement, but the student's GPA will not be affected. It is important that students and their advisors understand this policy, especially if a student is consulting about withdrawing from a course.
Here are important details for students and advisors to understand about this policy.
- Friday, December 18, 2020, is the last day to opt into the alternative (S/NC) grading policy. Students will be able to request the Satisfactory grade in MyOHIO Student Center after their faculty member has assigned their official grade and it is available in MyOHIO Student Center provided the course is not exempted.
- Students are encouraged to consult with their college or regional campus Student Services Office or academic advisor in order to make an informed choice based on the potential positive and negative impact of grade conversion. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate the consultation process prior to requesting grade conversion.
- Students should be aware that some courses are exempt from the Satisfactory/No Credit grading option and the standard A-F grading option will remain in effect. Courses exempt from the Satisfactory/No Credit grading option are posted here.
- Grades of D+, D, and D- will automatically convert to Satisfactory unless the course is exempted.
- Failing (F) grades will automatically convert to No Credit unless the course is exempted. However, if a student receives an FN (for never attending) or an FS (for stopping attending) those grades will become a part of the GPA. Therefore, it is important that students continue engaging in their coursework and participating in their coursework and exams.
- Satisfactory and No Credit grades do not impact the grade point average (GPA).
Please make sure your advisees understand this policy so they can make the best decisions as they work to complete this semester successfully.
