Your 2017 Cornucopia Auction & Social Is Almost Here:

Saturday, November 4, from 5 to 9 PM

It’s just a week and a day until the Cornucopia Auction, The Academy’s only fund raising event of the year. Have you bought your tickets yet? (And a word to the wise: if you order two tickets in advance, you get a third one for free.)
Join other Academy families and friends for a fun evening of socializing; delicious drinks, appetizers, and desserts; great music; and live and silent bidding on an impressive selection of items, including handmade artwork, crafts by local artisans, personal services, unique themed baskets, getaways, gift cards to favorite local shops and restaurants, and much more.
Just a few of the items you’re going to want to bid on:
    •  A pair of box seats to the Red Sox. Comes with free parking just a 10-minute walk away. Bonus: the Sox tickets are bundled with passes to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
    • Botanical Metamorphosis Bleeding Heart, a lovely botanical print created by Ann Parker, an Academy great aunt and wonderfully talented artist.
    • Two lift passes to Mount Snow—because yes, winter is coming.
    •  A gorgeous cherry coffee table, handmade by Howard Crowingshield and Ken Bigelow.
    •  A one-night stay for two at the breathtaking Guest House at Field Farm in Williamstown.
    • A beautiful, colorful glass urchin bowl, created by glass artist Robert Dane at his studio in the northern Berkshires.
    • A Couple's Paradise Package at Northampton’s East Heaven Hot Tubs: a half-hour hot tub followed by an hour-long couple's massage.
    • A delectable Greek Feast for Six, prepared and delivered to your door by the talented Karen Rehmus, P10, 14.
    • Two full-day river rafting trips on the Deerfield River with Academy favorite Zoar Outdoor.
    • A private wine tasting for up to ten people, hosted by Provisions in Northampton.
Check out more auction items on The Academy's Facebook page.
Can't make the event, or have far-away family or friends who want to support The Academy? Get in on the action via a proxy bid form.
Need childcare for the big night? We’ll have craft projects, movies, and pizza here at school for kids aged three and up, staffed by juniors and overseen by Academy staff members. Please be in touch with Steph Powers with questions or to arrange childcare for your kids.

    Parent Annual Giving Update

Big thanks to all families who have pledged or given to date! We're at 67% and counting.
Please know that every gift matters, and 100% participation is our goal. You can pledge now and set up a payment plan to fulfill your commitment by June 30, 2018, or make a one-time gift. Visit our secure online donation page to do so. Contact Martha Tirk with questions.

    EL LIBRO DE LA VIDA

All students will be invited to watch this 95-minute, PG-rated, animated film The Book of Life in Spanish, with English subtitles, during lunch time over three days beginning on October 30, to commemorate the most important holiday in Mexico, “El Día de los Muertos.” Unlike Hallowe’en, the Day of the Dead does not emphasize scary hobgoblins, but serves as a memorial day to remember the beloved departed. If parents have questions and/or do not wish to have their children watch this film, please contact Catherine Valdez prior to October 30.

ACADEMY TO SPONSOR HOT CHOCOLATE RUN

The Academy will be a red-ribbon sponsor this year for Safe Passage's 14th annual Hot Chocolate Run. We encourage all members of our community to support this great event.
With our sponsorship we have the opportunity to register a team of 8 participants at no additional registration cost. Please contact Martha Tirk by November 10 if you're interested in participating, and representing The Academy.  We have a couple of runners already!

    Studio Block Close-Op:  Project Upcycle

    Refashioning Garments with Heather Micka-Smith

Students learn about creating clothing and accessories by refashioning old garments into new wearable goods. Students are examining ideas and trends related to sustainability in fashion design.

    Classroom Close-Ups:  Science

Students in Geometry designed small toys and practiced printing them on the school's 3D printer.
After a visit to the Shelburne Falls Wastewater Treatment plan two weeks ago, 7th graders tested their own water filtration systems in Climate Connections this week.
On Friday, the 7th grade Climate Connections class furthered its study of wetlands by exploring the Hawley Bog and found several pitcher plants which are insectivorous.
Chemistry students simulated finding the atomic mass of a new element -Candium- from three different 'isotopes' of Halloween candy.

Sports Recap:  Week of October 27, 2017

On Monday, November 6, we will be celebrating the end of The Academy's fall sports season. Feel free to join us from 2:15 PM to 3:00 PM in the Sumner Recital Hall.
On Monday, the Boys JV soccer team ended their season with an impressive 4-3 win over Pine Cobble School. Raymond M had two unassisted first half goals. Alec D scored in the second half and later apparently struck the ball at exactly the same time as his twin brother, Will D, for The Academy's final goal. Alex T made eight saves in goal and the Aardvards had an impressive 26 shots on goal. The team finished the season with a 2-0-2 record.
In a rainy River Valley Athletic League quarterfinal game on Tuesday, the girls lost 2-0 to Four Rivers. Seniors Ella D, Nellie B-O, Emily C, and Lilah F all made great contributions in their final high school soccer game.
In their wet RVAL quarterfinal, the boys defeated the Dublin School 3-2 in the first minutes of the first overtime period. Hendrik P notched the winning goal, his second of the game, while Nat B-O also scored for Charlemont. Tucker Z-A assisted on all three goals. Jaromil T, Winston P, Sam R, and Liam F had strong games in defense in front of Kyle N's impressive afternoon in goal.
On Wednesday, the mostly 7th and 8th grade mixed gender soccer team traveled to the Hartsbrook School and concluded their season with a 3-0 win. Atticus R had two goals and Celeste D added another on a nice assist from Charlie P.  Gwen H made several saves to earn her second straight shut-out. With so much young talent, the future looks bright for Aardvark soccer.
Cross-country is gearing up for the RVAL Championships on Wednesday, November 1.
