TUFTS PARENTs and Families (TPF) NEWSLETTER
January 19, 2023
Dear Parents and Families,
It's wonderful to have students back on campus this week. President Monaco's recent message reflects on the fall semester and looks ahead to this next term, which will be his final semester as the university's president after 12 years of service in the role.
In case you missed it as last year wrapped up, the Green Line's Medford/Tufts station is open! And, if you haven't had a chance, I hope you will take the time to learn more about Tufts' incoming president Sunil Kumar who starts in July 2023.
In this first newsletter of the new year, we introduce you to Assistant Director of Student Affairs for SMFA Stephen Green, "Career Corner" highlights spring term resources, and if you have a high school student at home, the European Center's Tufts Pre-College Summit Program might be of interest.
Best wishes,
Carole McFall

Meet Assistant Director for Student Affairs at SMFA, Stephen Green

Stephen Green started at Tufts in September 2022 as the inaugural Associate Director of Student Affairs for SMFA. His passion for student affairs-related work started as an undergraduate. “I was involved in student government and a lot of organizations. I remember talking with my mentor in student affairs and saying, ‘I want to do what you do.’” After receiving a B.S. in New Media from Indiana University, the Indiana native went on to get his master’s degree in Student Affairs from Colorado State University and gained first-hand experience at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Lake Forest College, and most recently, Colorado School of Mines.
In his new position, Green manages the operations of the SMFA Student Affairs office for undergraduate and graduate students, advises the Student Government Association, oversees student support resources, and leads Orientation initiatives for SMFA. He describes the role as encompassing all aspects of the student experience beyond academics including event planning and strengthening services avaiailable to SMFA students.
One of his goals is establishing the SMFA Student Affairs office as a hub for resources, connection, and community building. During the fall semester, the team regularly hosted colleagues from Medford, including DSDI centers, at the Boston location to meet with students. They also launched Funky Fridaze—monthly social events for students, faculty, and administrators to gather in the school’s Atrium for games, food, and music. Green says the events, which have been loosely themed for some added fun (e.g., Halloween in October and Fun with Dogs in November), have been well attended.
Happy to be back in New England, connecting with arts students, and part of Tufts, Green emphasizes that it’s an exciting time with new positions in Student Affairs focused on the SMFA student experience and the opening of the new Green Line extension, which gives students another option for traveling between campuses and getting around the city. He also says the Fenway campus is excited to welcome new SMFA Dean Scheri Fultineer, who started this month. “There’s a really good energy right now. I’m looking forward to the year ahead.”
