An emerging difficulty in writing these letters is coming up with new ways to say we face challenging times. But that, unfortunately, has become our new normal. Federal efforts to defund and control higher education continue to cause turmoil throughout US academia, and UC Santa Barbara has been no exception.
Despite all this, our department is flourishing. We are delighted to see Ana Guerrero Gallegos, a UCSB alum, return to campus as a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow, having earned her PhD from Princeton University. We also keenly anticipate the arrival of Marissa Nichols as a new faculty member in January. Meanwhile, a robust cohort of incoming graduate students has enlivened our courses and extracurricular activities.
