Conversations with Women Who Make a Difference

United Way of the Capital Region’s WLN (Women’s Leadership Network) gathered at the Hilton Harrisburg on August 28 for Conversations with Women Who Make a Difference.

Members heard from Megan Healey from the Pennsylvania Commission for Women and Judith McCrea from Hamilton Health Center. Megan provided her leadership insights while Jude provided an update on Contact to Care, United Way’s access to health care pilot project.

The Contact to Care pilot project helps connect individuals without health insurance to care and a primary medical home. As of October 31, 2019, 461 individuals now have insurance, 1,825 individuals have been referred to support organizations and 677 individuals have a primary medical home.

WLN Volunteers at Christ Lutheran Church for Day of Caring

WLN members banded together to volunteer at Christ Lutheran Church on September 6 for United Way’s annual Day of Caring. The Health Ministries of Christ Lutheran Church Dental Clinic provide free dental services for local residents in need. This care is part of United Way’s Contact to Care pilot project.

Volunteers spent the day restoring a room in the church which will serve as a children’s room. Restoration efforts included painting walls and cabinets, installing a rug and mini fridge, assembling shelving units and cleaning toys. The day also included a tour of the facilities by Rev. Drew Stockstill.

Vino & Volunteering Event

United Way’s WLN members enjoyed an evening of networking, noshing and giving back on October 17 at Duke’s Riverside Bar & Grille at the Vino & Volunteering event.

Forty-nine women worked together to assemble 250 birthday bags and 100 boo boo kits. The birthday bags were donated to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and the boo boo kits were distributed through United Way’s Contact to Care program.

For families struggling financially, the birthday bags provide a special opportunity to celebrate a loved one’s birthday without the financial stress of purchasing materials. The boo boo kits will provide low-income families basic first aid items that cannot be purchased with food stamps.
