Arm yourself with knowledge and tools
Accepting our accessibility mission |
Following up on the campus notice that went out this week, let’s clarify your next steps for digital accessibility compliance.
Site owners are responsible for making sure websites meet accessibility and usability standards. IT Services is here to support you in those efforts.
We’ve sent previous emails and have hosted Zoom meetings and demos since last fall to alert you to UC’s accessibility requirements and the April 24 compliance deadline. This email repeats some of that same information; see additional links at the bottom of this email to catch up on training and resources you may have missed.

Heighten your intelligence |
Sharpen your senses by reviewing the most common and most easily-fixed accessibility issues (links, images, and headings).
Follow the links at the bottom of this email to increase your knowledge of accessibility best practices and to expand your skillset.

Your website has an advantage if it’s built and maintained using the campus CMS. Our page templates and formatting are designed (and constantly refined) to meet accessibility and usability standards.
If you’re overriding built-in features — changing font size or text color, not using page titles or headers correctly, or using graphics instead of text for content — then you must correct these things.
There may also be smaller issues that you aren’t aware of. The Siteimprove app finds all content that doesn’t meet accessibility guidelines, pointing you to each instance and highlighting what needs to be adjusted.
Armed with accessibility intelligence and tools, are you ready to begin your mission?

-
Schedule time on your work calendar in March and April to work through this checklist. Don’t wait until the last minute.
-
Request a Siteimprove account. If multiple people maintain your site, you may wish to assign one or two people to be in charge of accessibility, or you can choose to have your own accounts to monitor and fix different sections or pages.
-
Once you have your account, use these step-by-step instructions to view your Siteimprove reports and discover what you need to fix.
-
Log into Siteimprove for a few hours each week. Choose a couple of Level A or Level AA issues to work on each time — UC has committed to meeting accessibility standards to these levels.
- Aim to get your website’s Siteimprove scores into the “green zones” to ensure you’re meeting all benchmarks for best practices. Remember, no one gets to 100%!
-
Sometimes Siteimprove flags issues that are built into our page templates. You don’t have access to adjust these, and don't need to worry about them. Learn more about CMS template accessibility and how ITS deals with these issues.
-
Once your site meets accessibility and quality standards, schedule time once or twice a month to review and maintain your high scores.
